october 2000 was the USS cole attack, which, while not huge, was certainly a damper on things and a reminder of our problems with islamic terrorists.
then november kicked off the bush v. gore debacle, which coincided with the demise of pets.com and the bursting of the internet bubble, which continued to unravel into spring 2001.
then we had the hainan spy plane crash/diplomatic incident with china in april, which made america look weak, along with the riots in cincinnati. tropical storm allison flooded southeastern texas in june and cost millions&billions.
then we went back to frivolities for the rest of the summer - sharks and gary condit and bush's big announcement about stem cells. but after that...
