its a categorization of behavior patterns which could be caused by any number of things, much like saying some is diagnosed with "depression". it just so happens that amphetamines treat the symptoms well in some people.

that's not to say its a particularly safe treatment or effective in the very long term, because we're just throwing shit on a wall and seeing what sticks.

to say its over diagnosed its pretty incorrect, since you can't overdiagnose a classification. this isnt the same as saying everyone with fuzzy vision has glaucoma. the real discussion should be around whether the classification itself has merit and whether taking such drastic action in a large number of people is warranted, but people are idiots doctors are lazy and pharm is making bank so nothing will change for the foreseeable future.

If that's where the real debate is, why do "experts" insist that "there's no question that ADHD is a real thing that significantly impairs patients."

That's like saying "laziness is a real thing that impairs patients."

Not flame: You actually seem like a scholar of sorts.

I've done a shitton of reading on ADHD and stims in the last week or 2 and found that Adderall is pretty much literally drinking the Kool Aid.

You feel *it*, heart racing, mouth drying, so you think you're enhancing your performance. But that's just deluded optimism & overestimation of your performance while the drug is active. Meanwhile, your sober prof reads your work and thinks "what a disorganized, incoherent screed."

Some Penn Med scholars wrote this devastating finding on mixed amph salts (MAS): " In sum, on average participant believed that the MAS had enhanced their cognitive performance more than placebo.

This perception stands in contrast to the reality: There was no actual enhancement on average nor were participants who felt more enhanced by the MAS more likely to show a true enhancement effect."

What's worse, insofar as dopamine is part of the solution, overstimulation & Adderall induced dopamine overload only compound the problem because of the YERKES-DODSON IRON LAW of diminishing returns: Adderall improves sustained concentration (i.e., tunnel vision), but there are tradeoffs on other cognitive skills. Once you're past the optimal stimulation level, Adderall's overstimulation pushes you into the NEGATIVE returns, downward-sloping portion of the dose-response curve.

it has to do with inadequate dopamine activity. ADHDers don't experience motivation as easily or strongly as normal people, which has all sorts of consequences.

basically, only SOME motivations are above the "waterline", and these dominate your behavior and get you stuck in ruts. stims allow you to experience a broader range of motivations, which allows your brain to see its way to goals it couldn't see before. those goals then inhibit the degenerate motivations you were overemphasizing before, making you more chill and normal.

except this isn't really true. there have been quite a few studies on the dopamine hypothesis and the results are tepid at best. to treat it as a true biological phenomenon instead of a classification is the biggest mistake people make when discussing ADHD (and other psychological disorders). just because X drug is known to affect Y neurotransmitter and has Z effect does not mean the underlying cause of whatever needs to be corrected is aberrant activity in said neurotransmitter. of course it could be in some people, but not all or probably even most.

ADHD is a categorization, not a biological disease--much like say mono (which is a classification of symptoms most often caused by Epstein Barr, but not always). Except unlike mono there is zero proof 80-90% of ADHD cases are caused by dopamine activity being wonky.

I was just generalizing bro. of course it's a messy category, but the point is there is in fact some real shit going on and the motivation issue is a pretty central one.

and to add to that, I think it's partly a dopamine problem, partly an emotional disorder, partly a matter of certain cognitive bottlenecks, and partly just a lack of certain skills (which some people don't develop as naturally as others).

yea, it's like an ADHD "therapist" telling a kid's mother to withhold XBox until he does his homework, to make XBox a reward motivating him toward his HW. This is "cognitively restructuring" the ADD kid's environment with a carrot and a stick.

What a fraud disorder.

for someone with hardcore ADHD, something as simple as that isn't going to fucking do anything. they need more handholding, like a retarded kid trying to learn math. basic parenting techniques that work for normal kids aren't effective.

Oh? What more "coaching" can an ADHD "expert" do than to suggest carrots & sticks to parents?
