its a categorization of behavior patterns which could be caused by any number of things, much like saying some is diagnosed with "depression". it just so happens that amphetamines treat the symptoms well in some people.
that's not to say its a particularly safe treatment or effective in the very long term, because we're just throwing shit on a wall and seeing what sticks.
to say its over diagnosed its pretty incorrect, since you can't overdiagnose a classification. this isnt the same as saying everyone with fuzzy vision has glaucoma. the real discussion should be around whether the classification itself has merit and whether taking such drastic action in a large number of people is warranted, but people are idiots doctors are lazy and pharm is making bank so nothing will change for the foreseeable future.

If that's where the real debate is, why do "experts" insist that "there's no question that ADHD is a real thing that significantly impairs patients."
That's like saying "laziness is a real thing that impairs patients."
Not flame: You actually seem like a scholar of sorts.
I've done a shitton of reading on ADHD and stims in the last week or 2 and found that Adderall is pretty much literally drinking the Kool Aid.
You feel *it*, heart racing, mouth drying, so you think you're enhancing your performance. But that's just deluded optimism & overestimation of your performance while the drug is active. Meanwhile, your sober prof reads your work and thinks "what a disorganized, incoherent screed."
Some Penn Med scholars wrote this devastating finding on mixed amph salts (MAS): " In sum, on average participant believed that the MAS had enhanced their cognitive performance more than placebo.
This perception stands in contrast to the reality: There was no actual enhancement on average nor were participants who felt more enhanced by the MAS more likely to show a true enhancement effect."
What's worse, insofar as dopamine is part of the solution, overstimulation & Adderall induced dopamine overload only compound the problem because of the YERKES-DODSON IRON LAW of diminishing returns: Adderall improves sustained concentration (i.e., tunnel vision), but there are tradeoffs on other cognitive skills. Once you're past the optimal stimulation level, Adderall's overstimulation pushes you into the NEGATIVE returns, downward-sloping portion of the dose-response curve.
