not that it isn't worth trying. you have little to lose aside from the time prepping case interviews. generally not all of MBB is even willing to hire law students though. mckinsey is the most receptive. |

Had a 800 Math SAT on my resume (and high 700s on the other 2 sections). Didn't get the job because it turned out they were just doing a "trial" recruitment program on 1Ls and only hired 1 out of 25 people who received a 1st round invite.
But case interviews ain't no sweat.
And McKinsey and its 2L & 3L hiring are much larger than this BB "trial" on 1Ls, though even BB have "established" but slim 2L & 3L hiring.
It won't be easy, but I was asking whether it/Goldman/JPM/etc are my only chances at getting out of 2L OCI with my head held high instead of hidden between my legs. Or Martoma |

my point about OCI is that you just don't gain anything. it's like someone who got no-offered over the summer telling 3L OCI they "chose" to withdraw from offer consideration before decisions were made bc they knew they didn't want to work at the firm. i know a guy who actually did do this, but the fact he could honestly say he withdrew before getting a decision on whether he'd get an offer was meaningless because it strains credulity to think someone "voluntarily" withdrawing was doing it for any reason other than to strategically avoid the stigma of a no-offer that was all but certain. |

I don't know what "bottom of the class" means but unless it's like straight LPs and Fs I don't think you're wasting your time at oci. Your CSO should provide pretty useful tables of X grades got Y amt of callbacks and whatnot as at HYS level schools are pretty transparent about that stuff. Shouldn't be a problem to get Y and S's data sheets if you're at H too, and vice versa. Look at some hard data before you call oci hopeless.
If you want to be a lawyer I don't think you should drop out. If you're just in law school because hey it was there, I dunno. But it's worth doing oci I'm guessing.
Edit: also if you do want to be a lawyer and like litigation and strike out at OCI start setting yourself up to clerk. Not at all unheard of for people who struck out or got latham'd to play their way back in after one or two clerkships. |

That former student then killed it at that feeder clerkship and went on to SCOTUS.
I gunned pretty hard in his class toward the end, mostly to cop dat RA gig. But I blew it with him gradewise.
Can I actually gun back to respectability for 3L hiring or a clerkship? Do V-firms consider apps from HYS/EDNY clerks who didnt do a 2LSA there, or will my resume just get tossed into the black hole?
If so, how? |

I don't see why you can't get some amlaw SA next summer though. Focus on bidding. Get your school's callback/offer data. Work hard in your RA assignments. If you get nothing out of oci talk to the clerkship office start of 2L year about gunning for clerkships. |

So ~135K at graduation, pre interest. Maybe less because that assumes the standard CoL budget, while I'm, err, very minimalist re room & board & otherwise mandatory school insurance obviated by copping dat MA/CT/CA ACA expanded Medicaid.
May be eligible for EBT for my 2L year.
And yet, I still care about emerging from OCI with my head held high and not between my legs. |

As far as practical advice, I don't know enough to have much to offer. If the NY area is where you are from, is there some sort of Midlaw that you could target in NJ/LI/CT? Upstate NY? If you can drop down a level in terms of competitiveness, you will find that your credentials cut a lot more ice. |

Your grades are your grades.
Focus on getting a $160k job. When I was in law school it wasn't all that uncommon for someone to turn down a high rank firm for something more "chill" (although that took a lot of unfortunate souls to Latham instead of DPW).
Middling grades can also pull off the occasional Jones Day or Fried Frank. Apply broadly guided by CSO data. I don't know what else to say without repeating myself. |

I can remember meeting with my 1L section at the end of 3L, and a chick proposed that everyone go around and report where they were going to work after graduation. I hadn't found a job yet, and I thought, Good Lord, how insensitive that someone would suggest such a conversation. But I dutifully mumbled something about not having found a job yet, and the looks of schadenfreude I received from my "classmates" haunt me to this day. Most of those people are POS I'll never associate with, and they are not counselors today, could not even help someone with a speeding ticket, and served a few years as proofreaders before doing something else completely. Don't worry about their opinion. They are already in a receding parallel universe, in effect. And plan for a hard couple of years until you get your game. |

How would you even know what Median is upon graduation? You can only know if you're top 40%.
Your plan should be to get a respectable number of H's sprinkled in your transcripts moving forward. You're not somehow going to gun your way to top 1/3rd from bottom at HYS.
You should also do OCI. People swing V-20 with all P's.

If you still really want to do a firm even after interning in gov, you can always work your butt off, get your grades up, and do 3L interviewing (this market has come back and seems to be getting stronger). And you will always have gov as an exit option (KEEP IN TOUCH with people from your 2L summer) when you hate law firm life (which you will). Also take the un exam if you have any interest in "international law." |
