My gf, was heating water for some tea in the microwave, using an old sango nova blue mug that I've had for maybe 8 years or so. The mug was clean and had only water in it. After a minute and a half a burning sugar smell came from the microwave. I pulled out the mug and this happened.

It looks and smells like burned carmelized sugar. This is the second time this has happened. Notice the burning shit is on the face of the mug where there is no water, and also on the handle of the mug. Where there is water, no burning shit.

Anyone have any fucking clue what this is? I am 100% certain the mug is clean and there is no sugar or anything else in the tap water. The micrwave is also clean. We've microwaved other shit in mugs/plates/etc no issue.

Science nerds pls help!

And yes, make fun of my shitty granite counter tops all you want.

why do you care? pure curiosity?

but i'm guessing that it had tiny cracks in it, water got inside and mixed with the chemicals over time, then when it was heated up it expanded and seeped out

I care because I am 1) curious and 2) would like to know if it is safe to microwave any of this sango brand cookware, which I have been doing for the past 8 years. I dont drink coffee or tea, so very seldom do I microwave mugs.

I clean it thoroughly but see no cracks in it. Doesn't mean they dont exist.

probably means the cup isn't just ceramic. there's paint of some type on it which is dissolving. it doesn't need to liquefy in order to act like a liquid in the microwave; it just needs to be soft/drippy under the surface glaze.

probably the binder in the paint is getting torched as it heats up and is burning.

my suggestion is to re-glaze the cup to trap the paints.

If it's stoneware that has been glazed, it's something called crackled glaze, basically the glaze expands at different rate than the clay body which over time causes cracks which leads to what you have there.

makes sense. So what is actually burning? the paint? I assume the ceramic itself and the glaze does not burn.

No it's the glaze that's burning/cracking.

You have to be careful because some of that shit is made in China and they use lead-based glaze. Either way you should just throw it out or try and get a refund from the manufacturer.

The glaze is reacting. Lots of glazes have metal in them, including lead.

why does the metal burn after the glaze cracks and not normally.

The brand supposedly is lead free.

I had some dishware and mugs from Crate & Barrel and the glaze eventually cracked just like this, too, after microwaving. I don't trust them not to be lead free or not to have some other Chinese poison in them and they all went into the garbage. They will lie and put lives in danger to make one more penny. I tried just not microwaving them for a while, but then had two sets of dishes and rules and it was just stupid.

I then bought a glass Pyrex pitcher to heat up water for tea and that shattered eventually. Everything is shit now.
