6. Springsteen

7. Led Zepplin

yeah, Elton John just doesn't seem right to me. Maybe in 1987, but his icon status has really seemed to fade in the last couple of decades.

Madonna belongs. She was hugely popular for most of the 80s/90s. Probably the biggest popstar during those decades after MJ. And she's had such a huge lasting impact on female pop acts. They are all still basically doing Madonna's schtick today.

Good work. This seems to be the CR list.

Maybe swap Elton John for a band like U2 or Nirvana (not based on merit, but just "icon" status).

LJL at a list like this including led zep and fucking elton john but without Hank Williams and at least one or two jazzmos (Davis, Coltrane, Armstrong, Holliday, etc.)

tbf, if we're going by "iconic" as opposed to "influential" or something not as based on popularity, they would not make the cut. hank williams hasn't been played on mainstream country stations for perhaps 40 years now. his sales numbers are quite low. same with the jazz folks.

if we were doing this by impact/influence on future musicians, we'd have to include guys like buddy holly and probably the glenn miller orchestra.

i understand the distinction. the people i mentioned still make the cut above what are nothing other than popular pop acts like led zep and ej. the whole list is "iconic" to the same segment of the population and leaves out over half the country. hank williams is the biggest icon in country music, which is still at least as big as rock/pop. he's a T5'er on that list easy. those jazz bros still have huge cred among a sizable population of are country. any list besides a list of album sales where the rocket man places above them is a retarded list. HTH.

aside from sinatra and some early elvis it's all the same genre of music. it's a shit list, and should be titled "highest selling artists we've all generally agreed don't completely suck."
