"I think work-life balance is a fiction. And it’s overrated. If you want to be great at whatever you do, there isn’t really balance."
I agree with her. She actually seems pretty chill for a lawyer chick

"Would you encourage your children to be lawyers?
No.
Why not?
My daughter would make a fabulous lawyer, but I think the profession has changed. We have too many lawyers in this country. When you’re talking about paying $100,000 for a degree that doesn’t necessarily get you a job in your chosen field, you have to wonder whether there is a good rationale for going to law school. I think it’s a wonderful career, but I just don’t know if the opportunities exist the way they did when I graduated."

Whoa, does she post?
"How would you describe the work?"
At the time, a lot of the “interesting work” was related to investment banking. You would go into a conference room and the investment bankers would be sitting there, wearing red suspenders and banging the table. The lawyers would be on the periphery, looking like little lap dogs scribbling. My colleagues thought the bankers were very sexy. I didn’t.
"What was the response of your firm when you resigned?"
They were not happy. More than one person told me that in-house was a backwater, somewhere good lawyers did not go. But I did not care what they thought of me or my career.

LJL at women and their constant competition with each other.
"Did you encounter any marginalization during your pregnancies?"
When I was at Citibank, I had a boss who had made different life choices than I did. She’d married a much older man and never had children. I’m sure that was by choice, but she was one of many women at that time who chose career before family. She was a rather difficult person, and made a point of saying that she was in the office on Christmas Eve until 8 p.m. — stuff that’s designed to make you feel guilty. In retrospect, I think that’s not what she was trying to do at all, that perhaps she was trying to justify her own existence. But I did feel my pregnancy, in her mind, made me a lesser lawyer.

I love this, billing under 2500 is the standard for putting family first.
Anything you would have changed?
Sometimes I look back and think, “Maybe I could have had a bigger career if I hadn’t made my children my top priority.” As I got more senior as a partner, I didn’t have any 2,500-hour years. But that wasn’t my vision of a professional life. Could I have been a famous lawyer or made more money? Maybe.

This is unfair, perhaps, because some very smart and wonderful people work there. But financial services work is not about creating anything. I’m not going to pretend that what we do at LVMH is rocket science. It’s not. But people don’t take themselves as seriously here, either. There are a lot of very smart, very creative people in this business. They know their work brings people pleasure, and that’s good enough. In the financial services industry, there was incredible arrogance about how important and how smart everybody was. And, of course, the lawyers were simply the back office. I’m back office here, too, but in financial services, the bankers were viewed as the smart, intelligent businesspeople. Everybody else was there to make it happen for them. Of course, the bankers were the ones who got huge bonuses. To me, it seemed a lot like emperor’s new clothes.

Way more honesty than you expect.
Also shocked this isn't an asian woman.
I wonder if the author and editor are spinning the tone of this article to make it so positive for the lulz, or if they are buying in to this woman's attitude.

i know. that right there makes her "done here."
also, she cops to basically never seeing her children and abandoning her husband, and then with zero self-awareness admits that her greatest regret was devoting too much time and energy to her family.
i'd be very curious to hear about her own upbringing.

Harriet,
You are one of the most incredible women I have the pleasure of knowing and calling my friend.
You are an inspiration to ALL women in ALL career paths.
I love that you disagree with having a work/life balance. That concept is absolute bullshit. Passion and success do not occur with balance.
I love you and respect you with my heart and soul. Amy B

Harriet, I love the article. It showed how women learned to juggles between time, family and career. We have all done it, some better than others. As long as your follow your path, success come in many different forms. My daughter is applying to Law School and I have her read your article. She got some great advice from it and hopefully she will learn from you. Best wishes in your new adventure. Iris P.

LOL this is from the "chill" lawyer described above:
“I think my kids are better off with a little benign neglect. That kind of intense optics on your kid isn’t necessarily beneficial.” My view is that having kids — for both men and women — is probably the best thing possible to be successful in business. It teaches you that you can’t do everything perfectly.

Describe your career path at Skadden — what are the highlights?
Working my ass off. What I mean by that is being ready to drop everything to solve a client’s problem. The first L.A. office leader (one of my mentors) set the tone, which was, when we’re busy, it’s all hands on deck. Those days were really fun. We had great work — lots of it — and would eat dinner in a conference room at midnight, then work until three in the morning. We were all young, and there was tremendous camaraderie. We worked as hard as necessary to get the job done for the client. When there was downtime, you took advantage of it and rested. At those times, I would go shopping, spend way too much money, and just take a breather. Then, when the next thing hit, I’d be there.

6'1, 154 lbs, arguing against PE requirement lol
http://www.hwchronicle.com/opinion/be-responsible-for-your-own-health/
Be responsible for your own health
As a wise Jamba Juice cup once told me, my body is a temple. I believe in this, but the same idea shouldn’t be thrust upon people.
February 13, 2013
As a wise Jamba Juice Styrofoam cup once told me, my body is a temple. I wholeheartedly believe in this principle, but I also believe that this same idea shouldn’t be thrust upon people who don’t agree with its core concept. The requests I will therefore make are simple: one, that we should eliminate the physical education requirement for students at the upper school and two, that the cafeteria should restart the sale of candy and soda in the cafeteria.
As for my argument against the PE requirement, my thoughts are pretty simple. I am six foot one, weigh 154 pounds, with 11.2 percent body fat, and a bunch of other numbers that, to be honest, I don’t understand, but that place me in the “healthy” range for an adult male. I’m in good physical shape, though I’ll admit the walk from Weiler up to Feldman-Horn leaves me breathless more than you’d suspect. However, I don’t compete in a sport at school, because as a popular internet meme would say “ain’t nobody got time fo dat,” but I do exercise every day and during weekends. During summer, I box and play tennis near-daily and since I don’t have school-related stress, I don’t have episodes of late-night binge candy eating. However, in my time in school, I have only gotten four trimesters of PE credit, out of the six that are required. In the next year and a half, I’ll have to take two more trimesters of PE or I won’t be allowed to graduate with my class.
It seems absurd that neither I, nor a friend of mine that rows crew (often considered to be the most rigorous common sport – have you even seen the Winklevi?) every day, nor many other students who see to assuring their own physical fitness by themselves, earns credit for these activities. I understand the intent of the program, but perhaps if a student can pass a rigorous physical fitness test they shouldn’t be forced to do six trimesters of PE.
I realize that lobbying against a PE requirement and following that up by imploring the school to sell candy and soda in the cafeteria makes me look like I’m part of the increasingly politically relevant Childhood Diabetes lobby. I assure you that I am simply trying to instill in my peers and also myself a drive to stay healthy that isn’t mandated by someone else. We should be presented with the choice of whether or not to eat sugared candy and sodas, and not have this decision made for us.
At some point, we’re all going to have to start working hard for long-term success in life, and in our careers, and not necessarily be working towards the short-term goal of a high letter grade as in high school. Likewise, we will all be responsible for our own health soon enough, and it’s crucially important that we get a sense of how to best do this as early as possible.
It is each person’s individual responsibility to make the choice of what they want to eat, and I think I can speak for the majority of students when I say that we feel ready to take on this responsibility.
