stoat pirates enslaving woodland mice. left-for-dead otters living only for vengeance. cockney-speaking hedgehogs. rage-consumed badgers lording over mountain strongholds. three page descriptions of vegetarian feasts. nine-part poem-riddles left by dead people. i didn't think about it as a kid, but that stuff was really out there.

If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings or Narnia (or The Wind in the Willows!), you should at least read the first Redwall book (which is a great story on its own even if you don't read the others)

i am/was a huge tolkien guy. i probably didn't the series as a kid because i was a precocious faggot reading adult books and was turned off by the animals.

That makes sense, because the depth of the Gothic medieval atmosphere (major nostalgia for the golden days of Christendom like Tolkien and Lewis) is not really emphasized in the marketing - it's a bait and switch in the best possible way.

Also, if you've never read The Wind in the Willows, I would recommend that as well - another one with incredible depth and substance, from a true lover of the True West.
