It does, but you also need to do this in a way that's not totally offputting, i.e. be likable.

You need confidence with juniors and deference to the right seniors. If you're too cocky around people above you, they won't like you.

I have extreme likeability and dominated in pre-LS jobs with ease (those jobs involved leading people and running a lot of initiatives) but I am also a biglaw flameout. Law is different. I actually think charisma can be a big problem if you're a junior associate.

In certain environments, it can come across as over-confidence/too big for your britches which signals that you aren't the typical jr associate drone. This can *really* rub boomer partners the wrong way especially if they are more of a service partner variety.

I have a thousand examples of things that went wrong related to this.

cr

the most charismatic person I ever worked with once walked into a meeting trying to be as discreet as possible, and quietly sat down in the corner.

Immediately everyone started pointing their bodies to him and directing all comments toward him for his approval. He said nothing. No one had ever met him before.

I'm guessing this person was not a first or second year associate.

Charismatic underlings can be seen as threatening to somewhat insecure bosses, I've seen this a lot. I'm talking serious charisma - like the type of person that is friends with every doorman on the way into the building and strikes up immediate friendships with people.

Law firms can be especially crushing to people with charisma that are not of the rainmaker level. Do some online research about the year Bill Clinton spent in a Little Rock law firm when he lost the governor's mansion. He was ready to kill himself in that environment and he is arguably the most charismatic person of our time.

That doesn't take charisma. It just takes takes the type of person who sees and values everyone they come across.

This dude was an older dude with a full head of gorgeous silver hair. I've posted about him before. I had a crush on him (only older man I was ever attracted to). Runs his own firm in commercial real estate.

Not if you're a woman

In fact the moment a male coworker kind of likes you, even if it seems platonic, is exactly when you have to start dealing with bullshit. And you'll probably end up being the loser.

Key is being professional, slightly friendly, considerate in how you divide work, fair, and emotionally distant.

Possibly. Though I can point to my sister who crushes it at work. She's highly regarded by her superiors and is well-liked by all. Her MO is she's kind of like a dude, dresses down, and has no problems being assertive or chumming it up with her coworkers. She's also quick-witted and knows how to joke or shoot the shit with older males in positions of authority. She doesn't have a warm personality nor does she exude any femininity which probably goes to the professionalism and "slight" friendliness you're talking about. I think a lot of this comes naturally to her since she's an older sister too.

By the way, lesbians kill it in workplaces, I notice. Something about being completely unavailable to men but friendly and professional really makes it easier for them to succeed.

No, it's that they're better at mirroring dude social cues/mores like the person you responded to described re: his lesbian sister. Lesbians do better because they are authentically less friendly and at least perceived as more level-headed than straight females that ever have an overly emotional reaction to a work situation. Also, lesbians are so used to dealing with other girls' bullshit in smaller, more insular groups that they don't have the option of leaving as easily as straights, and this makes them better at office politics. Not true of all lesbians, but definitely a certain type of lesbian will kill it at work in a male-dominated field with this approach.

You've never had a real job and are purportedly female, so it's great how you speak with confidence about how men in positions of authority in a work place view women. You're probably the least qualified person on this board to opine on the subject.

But you're making statements on how lesbians think and relate to others. That's not right at all.

My sister, my wife's sister, her partner, 20 of our closest friends (mainly through my wife's sister and her partner), my mentor at work and three execs that I support all agree that I'm qualified to speak about how successful lesbians approach their work personas. I'm glad you hired a couple lipstick "lesbians" at your perfume store, but they are a less representative sample.

I can see that. I get unreasonably emotionally attached to every female co-worker and it always ends poorly.

being a complete turd will hurt you though.

I find the most incompetent and quick to be shitcanned doods are the ones chatting you up about your weekend pretending to care.

I've seen this crap up close and it pisses me off. The athletic Chad gets promoted while nice people who work hard get screwed over year after year. The modern workplace is pure shit.
