Relying on some hiring manager or HR chick to hire you is a surefire way to end up in the cold or underemployed unless you're a grad of a top school (HYSPMWharton) or have a really in demand degree...

Looking for gigs is fine, but the problem is that most young people make that their sole route to obtaining an income. Not a good idea.

it really blows dick for the second percent, because when the reforms come, it will fuck over them and substantially reduce their lifetime earnings

"i'm going to work my dick off to get a good education and then become an accountant and save up and finally get that house with the pool" and then bam income taxes to 50% and it never happens, but hey at least healthcare for Pablo Darnell Ng will be free now, thank God!

Two thoughts.

First, I think it's exactly what you'd expect from global competitiveness. The upper class in most countries will start to look the same, the middle classes in most countries will start to look the same (for first world countries, this means the middle class regresses towards the global equilibrium, while for most of the rest of the world, their middle class improves and grows towards equilibrium). It's unsustainable and doesn't make sense to try to subsidize shitty people in first world countries so that they can feel like they're upper class relative to the rest of the globe.

Second, I don't give a fuck what anyone says, even if real wages etc. are lower today in the US than decades ago, middle class and poor people are still way better off now. May have less money now in real terms, but the shit they get with the money is way better, so overall they're better off. I'd much rather be middle class or poor today than at any other period in US history.

Advancements in technology. Things that poor and middle class people are able to buy are vastly superior what they could buy in the past. Technology has just improved so much. Electronics, cars, etc.

Plus they get other societal benefits - fucking internet, cell phone service, more satellites, way better medical services and drugs, more global stability (I'll take living during an era of terrorism over the cold war any day - way less risky.

Anyone who says they'd rather be poor or middle class at any other point in US history than today is smoking crack.

education and healthcare are way more expensive and the job ops are way worse. i think most poors would be willing to deal with slower internet and smaller tvs if it meant having more stable work and a better hope of their kids having a good future. the increased cost of healthcare/education probably swamps the financial benefitst of everything else too.

This is a good point, and I think about this often, especially when people say our standard of living isn't as high as it used to be. Of course it is - we just have to work harder to maintain it.
