Most AutoAdmit poasters ridicule 0Ls and even law students for their impetus to pursue the legal profession.

Things like "I like to argue" or " I want the prestige, money, and recognition" get laughed at here.

So what are sound reasons?

if you have the personality to be a litigator, that's a good reason. you have to love to win, to beat your opponent. you thrive on confrontation, and you exalt in victory. you have to crave that. chilmata has it. Drunkard has it.

edit: although if you need to borrow $300K to do it, i don't think there's anyone or any school where that's a good idea.

no, what they want to hear is a non-aspie personality, and that's about 5% of it. 95% of what they care about is your school name and GPA.

unless you mean a shitlaw litigation hiring partner. you might be able to convince them with a speech that talks about this.

i see you're already in law school. sure, talk about this aspect of your personality, if you are aiming to be a litigator. obviously get the highest grades you can, but after that, practice interviewing, that's my best advice. you gotta be comfortable.

also, hope you're enjoying civ pro because that's a lot of what litigation is about.

Do you think I should run for a federal clerkship?

yes, if you can get it, you should definitely try for a clerkship, again assuming you want to be a litigator. you'll learn more there than you will in 3 years of law school.

One thing though, I'm a good student and I would actually enjoy biglaw work, but I'm extremely aspie IRL. I am really shy and don't talk much. But when it comes to public speaking, I can do that. I just don't want my colleagues to think I'm unfriendly or I possess feelings of superiority. Will that hurt me getting breakfast?

don't worry about breakfast. you should focus on getting a clerkship. to that end, you need to be trying to get to know professors who know judges. talk to your clerkship coordinator if your school has one too and get familiar with the process. do that and try to get on law review or some other journal.

practice interviewing. if you have good school + good grades, you just need to not be unlikeable in your interviews. you don't have to be some charismatic bro. you can get there with practice.

worry about how you come across in the workplace after you get a job.

How do you guys feel about being partner at a small firm with 2 or 3 other partner where you handle all your own stuff? Not as cr as solo cause you still gotta be in the office to avoid pissing off other partners who feel like they have to be in office?

-family is in the business (e.g. dad has a solo practice you could inherit)

-actual, proven desire to do lefty progressive stuff (obama, civil rights, etc.), free ride, not worried about money

-you've already fucked up but did OK on the LSAT. E.g., a white bro at BU with a history degree may have no good options. He does well on the LSAT and now he can go to Penn law? That might make sense. At least he'll make a decent living.

Ran here to poast 1 and 3. I think that 1 is only credited for the cited example, though. Your dad being a partner at a firm doesn't mean shit -- this only applies if he's a solo.

Sound reason = having a current wage of ~$30K per year, and having no other good ideas for what to do with your life, and you killed your college GPA and got >170 LSAT.

1. You have a solid career plan that is realistic considering where you get into law school, your student loans, etc. that justifies law school.

2. You get into a good law school at a reasonable cost (T3: pay the full amount , T6: need at least some scholarship, T14: need reasonable scholarship, T20: full ride or don't go)

3. You basically have no better options.

Yeah, a cold, calculating cost-benefit analysis is the only real reason to go. "Love of the law" is BS, as is "prestige". Pre-laws don't know what legal practice is about and there's no real prestige anymore. It is just a job with a decent upper middle class pay if and only if you end up at the top of it. The people that get legit rich are few and far between.
