The hot shot on the sales team was some beta looking Indian dude. Probably cleared $200k after base salary+commission. The top 10% got to go on quarterly trips. My first year it was in Vegas where each salesman got a suite at the Wynn and dinner at some steak house. I was not invited. Apparently some of the dudes hired hookers.

Its pretty entry level. You usually start out as an entry level position where you do hella cold calls then move on to the Account Executive positions where your in charge of a specific territory. The thing is, you have to increase your sales EACH year and territories are routinely split smaller and smaller. So you get a smaller territory and are expected to have increased sales year over year. If your like top 5% you can progress to like head of sales for some start up and make bank ($500k)

I work for a non-profit software vendor (I work in product management, not sales). The sales people and account managers make as much as I do, but don't have my massive student loans. They can make a lot of money without a lot of education. It's very high-pressure, though. When the chips are down, they're quick to point fingers and become very desperate. Also, the travel is brutal -- they're on the road 4/5 days a week with overnights.

salesbros make 150k+ base and then commission on top of that, but it's very high pressure with brutal travel.

Sales is different. You have to get ownership from people outside your company and get them to commit to you and trust you.

That's way harder than just making sure your partner gives you enough hours or whatever.

Not sure about that

In a downturn the focus becomes minimizing costs ie overhead

The revenue generating activities of a company become paramount

I don't work in sales, but I have a general idea of what salesbros make at where I work.

It doesn't have to be SAP, but any big enterprise shop it's the sales folks that make the most money. More than the senior devs, more than the consultants, more than the PMs. More than just about anyone other than senior execs and VPs of the other departments. WorkDay, Oracle, Microsoft, VMWare, etc. are all pretty similar afaik.

People have this misperception that sales is all about being charismatic. It isn't. Especially software sales. It's mostly about being diligent, actually knowing about the service, knowing about the contract aspect. It's a knowledge based industry and people who are diligent, knowledge, and responsive do the best. Ironically, most lawyers would probably be very good in software sales. It's just they would hate the lack of rigor.
