Leaving midlaw for biglaw, 8th year (about to make partner). Got an offer for 240k. Lockstep would be in the 265-280 range depending on firm. I get this firm doesn't pay lockstep but wondering if any xo brothers are in biglaw at a non-lockstep firm and whether I pwnedself by not trying to negotiate more money.

Making 180 now. Definitely happy with the increase in pay, which is why I took it as is. Headhunter and I had discussed negotiating if I wasn't happy with the number. His reaction was that I probably shouldn't bother negotiating. Just curious if the range sounds right.

Of course you should negotiate! This is like listening to a broker when buying a home. The headhunter just wants the commission. At worst the firm can say no.

You should negotiate a cannot be let go without good cause clause.

By the time you are 8th year aren't you "off the grid" and so the salary and yearly bump is always negotiable anyways, even for lifers at the firm? What has the biglaw firm promised you as far as future progression?

I guess what I'm wondering is if there is even a "grid" for biglaw shops that don't do lockstep. I honestly thought that all v100 biglaw outfits paid lockstep and was kind of surprised to find out they don't.

There are a few crap firms that do this, market it as "buh buht you could make more than in biglaw" because the theoretical cap/bonus is higher than market...but I'm sure 0% of associates are ever awarded the higher range.

I think k&l gates, reed smith, maybe dla and maybe orrick are like this? and the firms that don't do class years but "ranges" like senior / managing associate?

what would you make if you made partner in midlaw? Why leave an unsure thing for a sure thing?

mid-200s tops unless i made equity, which is nearly impossible. also think the office where i am could be going to shit in the next couple years (retirements and no succession plan).
