What made XO great was the following:

(2) actual great writers -- I remember a guy, "Chancemeeting," who was actually one of the best music critics I've ever read; and

(3) halfway decent advice about how to do law school bullshit and a tiny bit of insight into how to survive the biglaw Thunderdome.

Big Star in general are one of those bands that, while excellent and worthy of exploration for any true muso, are often OVERrated by people who thrill to the idea of discovering something obscure and arbitrarily elevating it above more well-known material. That isn't meant as a criticism of them, but rather of the obscurantist tendencies of their fans.

[Q.] When do you think Bruce Springsteen hit the height of his vocal abilities? Watching him tear out a live performance of "Backstreets" from 1979 makes me think about how much he has lost since then.

[A.] Springsteen finally realized the full extent of his vocal abilities on Born To Run (the tonal contrasts between "Thunder Road," "Meeting Across The River" and the wild, howling coda to "Jungleland" run his full stylistic gamut). He maintained that peak in a technical sense until around Born In The U.S.A.

After that, his writing became much more monotonous and melodically drab, something which I think had a marked effect on his vocal skills. This is a bit of a chicken-and-egg question; perhaps he began writing less melodically challenging songs because his range was beginning to decrease. It's hard to say, but either way he never regained the vocal power he once had. That said, "Brilliant Disguise" (from 1987's Tunnel Of Love) features a vocal performance of incomparable subtlety.

Actually, I confess to liking Springsteen the best during his early years. Nothing he's ever done matches the wide-eyed excitement and inventiveness of The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle and its attendant outtakes like "Thundercrack," "Zero & Blind Terry," and "Santa Ana."
