In theory, we have moar choices than just Republican or Democrat each election cycle.. But in reality, we usually get one or the other.

Actually, Trump's current success in the polls is what made me think of this in the first place...

Never. Maybe one party will disintegrate and another will take its place, but two parties is the equilibrium state given our form of government.

This. First past the post voting ensures we only have stably two viable parties.

A third party will need to become popular for long enough to get First Past The Post replaced with an alternative election system in which vote% better matches legislative seat %. (Ie proportional representation.)

Most plausible path to this happening would start with these reforms being put in place at the local level.

The two party system has been remarkably resilient over the course of American history. The Federalists collapsed and briefly there was one party rule in the USA, which lasted for less than a decade before a new party emerged. Same with the Whigs collapsing - the GOP appeared in just a few years and won the POTUSy in their first five years.

Perhaps demographic change will kill the GOP, but something else will replace it.

As long as we don't succumb to a party-list proportional system, I would welcome additional parties, but I don't see how a third party can survive without a party-list proportional system.
