Is the vocabulary difficult?

I took it years ago so it might be completely different now, but here are the main points of what I remember:

*Scoring was not about how many you got right or wrong. It was about the level of difficulty you obtained. So as you got right answers the questions got harder. Your score was the level at which you are getting half the questions right. It was all computer and I think you had scrap paper but no calculator.

*Math was very easy. I wouldn't even say college level. Seemed easier than the SAT to be honest. A perfect score only got you a percentile in the low 90s, so lots of people were acing it.

*Verbal was very hard, but I have a hard time with vocabulary (esp analogies). But the percentile for that adjusted accordingly as well. A score of 650 was still about the 90th percentile. So it wasn't a very balanced test.

Thanks. Is the vocabulary section capable of being studied for other than reading the dictionary and engaging in rote memorization?

Yes. I had to work really hard on this for both the SAT and GRE. I boosted both about 50 points with studying.

Here are some recommendations based on what worked for me:

*Flashcards. But when studying, don't go through all of them the entire time. Pull out the ones you're getting right and continue to work on the ones you're getting wrong. Then a week later go through them all again. Pull out the right tones. You'll start to get a sense of which ones are tripping you up.

*On the cards, include the definition AND the word origin breakdown. I learned a lot of greek and latin roots for words, so even if I didn't know the word I could ballpark a guess by breaking it down to components.

*Find a study guide with a CD included or access to online games/testing. Kaplan was a good one for me, and they had vocabulary matching games, etc. Learning vocabulary can be very use it or lose it. The more you're doing it the better you'll retain it.

I'm sure there are apps now you can download that will help too. Practice practice practice. Good luck!

1. you have a low iq if you struggle with analogies

2. a scoring change has lessened but not eliminated the bizarre verbal/math split

Part of the issue with analogies was vocabulary. If I only had a sense of the word it was harder to come up with the linking sentence. I'd get the easier and medium ones right but not as many of the hard ones.

For me it was honestly largely a vocabulary issue. It affects your ability to do all the questions you're posting. But the books will also give you tactics for tackling questions even if you're not sure of all the words. Now I remember I think one thing I did for each section was to create a grid:

A B C D E

1

2

3

etc for all the question numbers. You can put x's for any answer you can eliminate. At least this way you can maybe get it down to 50/50. It helps you keep track.

I always thought my writing was ok but I didn't do as well on that section so I can't help much there. It's harder to practice for and I think my focus was verbal and math so I didn't read up as much on what they were looking for. I think I got 5's.

Copped a 168 V 170 M, it's a joke.

Only thing that caused me to slightly fuck up is that my vocabulary is mediocre for my level of intelligence so I missed a couple verbal qs. For lawyer types though it shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure you know hot words.

As for math, hard for me to advise since i know that shit so well but basically just know high school math like the back of your hand. And even if you're a whiz you need to check your work. I made a stupid misculation and thought 3 * 5 was 12, for example, but I caught it because I went back and checked my work. Good part is that if you're good at math you will finish it in like....1/3 of the allotted time so checking work shouldnt be a time concern.

B and C because they are similar in meaning and both work here.

I'm pretty weak verbally. I'm not even a 50th percentile poaster, but I copped a 164V and a 170Q. the lulziest part was that i got a 3.5 on writing.

So, I wouldn't call it easy. But I reminded me a lot of the SAT. And it was far easier than the LSAT (I got a 172). If I were applying to a program that cared about the verbal score, I would have needed to put in at least 40 hours of studying to pull that V score up to 170.
