Corporate (M&A/CapM) NYC BigLaw. Taking first assignment.

Any tips? Anything you wish you knew or did looking back?

No set rotation system, how many partners should I be taking work from, how many assignments at once, what "extracurriculars" should I be doing?

Thanks Best BOART ever.

See what associates look happy and leave early. Work for them and their partners.

Look for the associates that never leave. Avoid them.

They can be, but they are more likely to be inefficient and work for horrible partners. Working for the right partners is key to survival. It's also an indication that the type of matter they are staffed on isn't conducive to a good lifestyle.

Turn down work if you're busy, and turn down work if you're not busy but you're staffed on deals that could get busy, and turn down any work that seems shitty. No one really cares if you turn down work (assuming you end up with okay hours) but people will care if you do a shitty job on anything.

It is a lot better to be on one main deal at a time and be one of the core people on the deal rather than doing a bunch of ancillary shit for 10 different people. The best way to do that is to get assignments directly from partners and not through the assignment system. If there are partners you like or that you hear good things about, go chat with them and let them know you are interested in whatever they do and would like to work with them on their next transaction.

Do as little due diligence as possible, it's really boring and it doesn't teach you anything useful.

It can be pretty miserable but I think it's a lot better if you buy in to some extent and don't spend all your time with really cynical people.

Learn how to read financial statements if you don't already know.

This book is good and I wish I'd read it before starting: http://www.amazon.com/Working-With-Contracts-Corporate-Securities/dp/1402410603

If you get into a good routine for entering your time it will make your life a bit more pleasant.

Use your secretary a lot. He/she will be pretty useless when you first start but if you invest time eventually it will pay off.

stay organized

keep your head down

keep in mind the goal is to last 3-4 years and move on

SAVE MONEY SAVE MONEY SAVE MONEY. You should treat this like a one last heist situation. Even if you have big debt, don't aggressively pay it until you have some liquid cash savings (maybe 25k or so, enough to have some time to breathe if you get shitcanned). Don't be like me and blow your first year at bars and restaurants and on expensive clothes and shit. SAVE MONEY.

Target Savings a year? IDEAL Number?

I always read this BOART saying 900K etc Net Worth and doing the math I'm like how are people saving so much. Post-Tax and Rent idk how they have so much saved.

What's an ideal per year number?

idk man, it depends on your personal situation. i try to save 3k per month (while also maxing 401k) but not everyone can do that and some can do much more.

Agree except instead of save liquid, get 0% interest credit cards and float on that for twelve months. Pay down like 50k of your student loan debt the first year and you'll feel much better about life. And be saving a ton on interest.

As a junior you're not expected to know jack shit. You are expected to do the absolute bitch work that simply needs to get done and learn by osmosis over time.
