Analyzing exactly what companies do in order to predict cash flows and projecting revenues and working capital to forecast cash flows and value companies. Selecting good candidate target companies for buying out. Deciding on debt structures one could take on to maximize leverage to acquire companies. Helping to make management decisions within the fund's portfolio companies (more senior roles do this more obviously)

It pays extremely well and many funds offer carry (ie you can invest your personal funds into the fund), and is also very interesting and gives you a lot of real power, especially in the middle market.
