Net 415K so far this year (paid myself 200k salary so far, 50k SEP, and 165k left to K1 so far). On track to hit 500k by year end. I'm a solo in LA and mostly do PI and criminal. I'm starting to delve a bit into employment class actions. I had a thread about 6 months ago but posting another one for renewed questions about solo practice.

Here is a link to my current 2015 P&L http://imgur.com/4AXAcmP

SEP contribution is capped at 25% salary. So it has to be 200k for me to take 50k. Plus I want to max out SS contribution for when I'm old which means I need at least 120k or so in salary.

damn 180, do u do all the work urself or u have any attorneys working for u? id like to get into the 400k range but by my acount id need to do 40 cases, which i think is too much for my lazy ass so id need to hire someone to at least do written disc and defend p's depos

i think ur a mix of criminal clients paying u upfront and PI contingency? for the PI ur getting like some six figure settlements i imagine?

damn i need to branch out

I have a paralegal and a couple contract attorneys who do appearances/defend depos/etc for me. If you look at outside services on my P&L you'll see an expense for around 60k for that stuff.

Yes, on PI I'm getting a good number of 100k pops. My biggest settlement this year so far was 200k (driver had 100k policy and owner had 100k policy). I settle a lot of cases in the 50k-100k range. I have a couple big cases in the pipeline though that should be much higher, but no clue when they will settle.

fuk, 180, i need to get into this PI racket, its pretty hard for my shit cases to go above 50k.... so i neeed to make it up on volume

i think u said u et referrals a lot? but u get a lot from internet ads? how many prospectives do u estimate u need to talk to in order to get one case?

I do no paid advertising. Just networking a lot with non-lawyers and referrals from former clients/friends/family.

You don't need good cases to get good settlements. It is all about working up the cases. I settle a lot of 1k PD cases for 50k.

How do you scale at thsi practice if you have to do that for your clients? Eventually there won't be enough ours in the day.

Can you pay someone to generate leads for you? Hire like an Exec Assistant to follow up with them and make sure they get the right treat treatment and when?

First, my paralegal helps with this. Secondly the majority of my clients are with the same handful of doctors that I always work with. I have great relationships with my doctors. We text each other all the time and I go on double dates with a bunch of them and my wife. Some have been friends for years. For example one chiro sent me a text a few hours ago to give me MRI results on two clients and let me know they need an ortho consult.

Yeh, I think my actual expenses (not including filing fees) are going to be less than $5K this year and I have a physical shared office space really cheap but a few conference rooms at my disposal. Don't spend much on advertising though because really niche practice area...rely mostly on attorney referrals. But I'm not going to make anywhere near six figures my first year :/

My phone includes my cell phone. I work from home a lot so I reimburse myself for internet at the end of the year. I pay $150 a month to a friend who has a really nice penthouse in a big building to get my mail there and use the conference room. He also let's me put my name on the door. It's only about 5 min from my house so I just meet clients there a few times a week.

Lol at using Westlaw. I do PI and crim. No reason to pretty much ever use Westlaw. I am also a member of www.caala.org and they have an amazing document library and listserve.

re: westlaw

most of the main PI cases are in court rules and any new precedent would be in the state lawyers monthly/weekly bar journal? NJ is like this. My former shitlaw boss had no need for lexis. He just would highlight court rules, caselaw.com and keep an eye for new precedent on state law journal.

You are asking the wrong question.

I'm not in law, but I venture to say this is an entrepreneur type of issue.

Are you the type of person that can actually start his own business and succeed? Irrespective of law. If I gave you a McDonalds, or laundromat, or hedge fund, or SaaS company...can you identify the bottlenecks, hire out the ineffciencies, network with mentors, find a line of capital, find the angles of your market, identify a growing segement, hire great people...all the while doing *somewhat* decent level of work? If you can, then it won't be difficult.

Otherwise, just go to your firm, clock in, and let us handle transcending biz frontiers.

That ultimately all comes down to work ethic and not some magic pill he swallowed. The guy already explained above that most attorneys are lazy while he's willing to go the extra mile to get things done...that should give you enough insight as to why he's been successful.

I file a lot of lawsuits. I spent almost 10k so far this year on filing fees and I use fee waivers on all my poor clients so that 10k doesn't include a lot of filings. If you don't file a lot or try a case once in a while you start to get shitty offers.

Barely ever take a deposition. I defend a ton though. Most auto accidents don't have disputed liability and settle before experts are retained. Who would I depose?

My mom has referred me 1 case in 5 years and that was my uncle lol. So not really. Before law school though I was always social and had a large personal network. I lift 5 days a week and chit chat with everyone at the gym, I do bjj 3 days a week and socialize a lot there, I shoot every couple weeks and know the guys down at Oak Tree gun club, etc. Basically. I do a lot of social things where I meet people. All of this can be replicated if you put in the time. I got a client from Everquest 2 once. Was a dude in my guild like 10 years ago who I ended up becoming friends with in RL.

What's your approach to motion/brief writing? Do you usually argue about the law or the facts, or try to make it seem to the judge that it wouldn't be fair for my client to be fucked out of a judgment?

Lol my approach is to never do it. There is pretty much no law and motion in PI, and criminal stuff like motions to supress are pretty boilerplate. If I take the occasional civil lit case (I used to take a decent amount and pretty much stopped now) I farm out all the writing.

Do you think Judges tend to decide cases on the basis of law or fairness, from your experience?

From my personal experience or just in general? In my own cases judges rarely decide anything except a criminal motion here and there. Remember in LA when you file a PI case you get a trial date immediately and never see the inside of a courtroom unless there is a major issue. In criminal cases I file 1538 motions a lot but most are super long shots and they are pretty much objective losers.

On the off chance I do get an issue that could arguably go either way judges tend to rule in a way they think is either fair for the defendant or protects the public (depending on if they have a pro defense or pro prosecution bias).

Outside of my own personal experience, I think most contested legal issues are decided on personal belief of the judge instead of law. You can make a argument to support most positions so my guess is Judges just find the law after they decide how they want to rule. I have no support for this belief other than my best guess. I never clerked (although I was on law review and was top 5% at a T20) so many of you will know better.

Educated wealthy clients are the worst actually. They always think they know better, they are less likely to treat because of work, and they are high maintance. Poorer clients are great and tend to trust me more and take less of my time. I end up doing better on their cases too because they follow directions.
