Yes, I also got a 1 on the AP English exam.
But I went to a staTTTe school for UG and got some English credit for my ACT score. I kid you not. For MY ACT SCORE.
I learned nothing. Nothing!

"Like Pareto (whom the Straussians greatly admire), Strauss held to a theory of elites. Only a very few individuals, those fitted by 'nature' or 'genius', are morally capable of viewing the full and unadulterated truth -- a truth which is (Strauss believed) horrific -- and only these unelected few (the 'wise') are fit to rule. This truth is that there is, in reality, no such thing as Virtue, Morality, Justice, Goodness, or God -- these are merely shams -- fictions and screens -- for what really exists is material life (and its pleasures), and then void and the absurdity (or meaninglessness) of life. Thus, there is no Justice intrinsic in human relations and no rational basis for Justice whatsoever; the true state of man is simply one of natural hierarchy, the naked relations of dominance and subordination -- i.e., power.
In his brilliant novel, Humboldt's Gift, Saul Bellow, the great American writer -- who was very close to Allan Bloom and other Straussians at Chicago -- discussed this in terms of the Grand Inquisitor (from Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov). The Grand Inquisitor has been sent to supervise the burning of heretics (free-thinkers) -- and he admits to a confident that he is the preserver of a secret and horrific truth -- that there is no God, no Justice, no such thing as Goodness, no higher truths -- that it is all a fiction -- and that the heretics, in fact, were right -- but that it is a truth that must never be uttered. For the masses cannot endure it; society would devolve into a chaos and violence, living like animals, wallowing in despair -- or man is by nature wicked and 'incapable of virtue'. And so, without these fictions and coercions, civilization itself would implode. Man needs "miracle, mystery, and authority" (as Dostoevsky puts it) to give meaning to their lives, and to maintain them in a state of functional obedience. This is the 'noble lie', the 'pious fraud', that the Grand Inquisitor, to save mankind from knowledge of their awful destiny, must perpetuate. Civic society is thus a form of tragedy. This is pure Strauss."
