It depends on how you define severance. Except for the truly oblivious, there are numerous signs that "the talk" is coming before it actually does. If you count from the first time they start building a paper trail-- usually an email complaining about hours or alleged performance deficiencies, citing unnamed "people have been saying-- it can easily be a year. If you count from the time you actually get a talk, it's much less. In my case, I got a sort of "soft talk" where I was told I should seek new opportunities but no date was set yet, then three months later I was told I had to be somewhere else in three months (so six months total). I was still working on my old matters in the interim, but billing less than they were paying me.
