What's the deal with STAFF ATTORNEYS in NYC Big Law?

the staff attorneys I'm aware of are basically doc review specialist... generally they supervise contract attorneys, do first level QC, and report back to the midlevel associates on the case |

It ends up being around 30K less. My raises and bonuses are certainly smaller, though. I'm not actually sure what the disparity is between, say, a 5th year associate versus a 5th year staff attorney for base salary. Staff attorneys get business cards and bar dues paid for and all the same perks as associates, just a "less prestigious" title and no partner track and a bit less money. Contract attorneys are hired through a middle man and don't even work in the same office location and are paid hourly for short stints of work.
