Do they have offices identical to regular associates? Do they get the same office perks as regular associates, aside from the pay/title?

I'm not in NYC, but the perk of staff attorney is way easier work for slightly less pay (but still way more than I would have expected to make anywhere else) and no need for annoying ass-kissing and ladder climbing. Also, fewer hours - I hardly ever bill more than 8 hrs a day.

is it not just doc review?

the staff attorneys I'm aware of are basically doc review specialist... generally they supervise contract attorneys, do first level QC, and report back to the midlevel associates on the case

Maybe 30K or so less? It doesn't matter to me, though, because with my grades, I was never going to be a biglaw associate anyway, and as a staff attorney I'm making almost twice as much (or at least a quarter more) than I would have expected.

I think it was good timing and the right prior experience and attitude about the position. I make high 5 figures in low cost of living area.

I'm basing it off what I know first year associates generally start at in my firm and other biglaw firms in the state / area. It ends up being around 30K less. My raises and bonuses are certainly smaller, though. I'm not actually sure what the disparity is between, say, a 5th year associate versus a 5th year staff attorney for base salary.

Weird. Staff attorneys get business cards and bar dues paid for and all the same perks as associates, just a "less prestigious" title and no partner track and a bit less money. Contract attorneys are hired through a middle man and don't even work in the same office location and are paid hourly for short stints of work.
