their stock has definitely gone up. ten years ago, they were horrendously undesirable among the faux-elite. they might as well have been municipal garbageman jobs. but now they're decent-paying jobs at brand-name firms. they don't require the hours that actual law jobs require, and they dont come with the pressure. they're more like generic bland corporate jobs. there's way more opportunity to move around to different places and different companies and you don't always have to worry about the looming foreverpwned unemployment bomb. you also obviously dont have to worry about bringing in business. you have less competition from your peers. but nowadays they can be difficult to get without rock solid connections. i interviewed for a couple and the interviewers were all v10 refugees.

Compliance gigs are very project based. The job security is pretty poor. Yes, there are gigs where you have tremendous job security but most people in compliance are brought in to handle what amounts to overflow work. They stay a year or two, and then they move on to the next project. I have been at my compliance job for 7 years. I'm one of the few people here who can say that. Most people are gone in 2 years, maybe 3 and not by choice. In a lot of ways its what doc review was 15 years ago when the projects lasted 2-3 years and not 2-3 weeks. I suspect it will end the same way because corps are eternally on the lookout for ways to obliterate jobs where people dont generate cashflow.

I have a friend who leveraged 6 years of aml in a shitty bank (wells, citi) right out of law school to compliance at a better bank to an agc role in an even better one. He just got in there and networked like crazy.

It was incredibly tough and took him 8 years but he did it. He also went to a horrible law school and now has a job most big law bros want.
