Movie was a MONSTER, grossing $370M on a $23M budget.

But today it has like no cultural relevance.

No one ever refers back to it, in the way people will refer to ghostbusters, caddyshack, big lebowski, kingpin, wedding crashers, etc.

People will watch those movies all the time too. And they're always on TV.

Last time TSAM was on TV or you or someone you knew watched it?

I'm not saying it wasn't influential, though maybe that's part of the reason why people don't reference it as much today.

Just re-read that article you poasted and it kinda illustrates my point.

Movies that were influenced by TSAM, like American Pie, Old School, Hangover, 40 Year Old Virgin, Bridesmaids, etc., are all over TV on a regular basis, and people routinely cite those movies.

When is the last time you heard ANYONE mention franks and beans, or Woogie, or Tucker, or anything like that? When is the last time you saw TSAM on TV?

great movie.

Even today, whenever I want to annoy the fuck out of my wife, any time a pretty actress comes on TV I ask her, Is that the girl from Something About Mary.

She gets so pissed--heh--its awesome.

Dunno if this is a big reason, but the advent of social media made the whole premise unrelatable. LOL @ the idea of driving cross-country to reconnect with a long-lost girl.

Anyone care to speculate on how Ben Stiller would have proceeded in 2016?

I think of it frequently, but always as an example of the power of time to corrode comedy. When I saw it in theaters, it was hysterical - particularly the first scene with the balls in zipper, and the hair product scene. But there's no surprise left in that sort of humor, and so the movie now falls flat.

Still, Kingpin (1996) stands as an excellent movie, even to this day.

Pretty much exactly what I'm getting at.

Kingpin is fantastic. Whenever I see it on TV (which is about 100x more often than TSAM), I always watch at least part of it.

Ghostbusters also strongly stands the test of time.

IMO time has not been kind to TSAM. I also think time has corroded Austin Powers and Wedding Crashers and the Hangover. W/r/t the Hangover, I still like parts of it, but the movie really suffers once you see how they solve the mystery.

Agreed as to all. I'd note Stripes has also stood the test of time. I think the trick is to rely for humor on persona and character rather than shocking situations, as the latter become passe but the former are eternal.

It was weaker than similar comedies that came after, and even those haven't aged too well because they relied on gross-out gaffes that require the audience to be surprised. If you know what's coming or if you've seen even grosser or cruder behavior before, the shock is completely gone. The darker comedies (big lebowski, kingpin) and the shows and movies aimed at smart audiences (frasier, all in the family, the sopranos) are more timeless.

i also think it hurts that TSAM is really a comedic rom-com.

i find something like Step Brothers to be much, much funnier on rewatch. there are so many little nuggets in that movie.

SB is really a comedy, whereas TSAM is a rom-com imo.

i saw it in theaters in 1998 with my friends. missed all the sex references, of course. im autistic, btw. funny thing is, now i can catch every single reference to sex in any movie. wiser, but my boners arent the same. is that like science or something?
