Lindsay Porter and Robert Miller Jr.: Two First Dances, Two Decades Apart
Lindsay Elizabeth Porter and Robert Singleton Miller Jr. were married Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Waycross, Ga. The Rev. Dr. Samuel D. Tonge, an Episcopal priest, officiated, with the Rev. Robert A. Cushing, a Roman Catholic Priest, participating.
The bride and groom graduated from the University of Georgia.
The bride, 30, is an account director in the retail, entertainment and lifestyle categories at LaForce & Stevens, a New York public relations firm. She is the daughter of Nancy Rodgers Porter and Michael P. Porter of Waycross.
The groom, 33, works in New York as the Northeast account sales director at Softchoice Corporation, a technology professional services and sales company in Toronto. He is the son of Barbara Tonning Miller and Robert S. Miller, also of Waycross.
She was 12 and he 14 when Ms. Porter and Mr. Miller first met in 1997 at the National League of Junior Cotillion chapter in their hometown.
“She was a very popular girl, a very smart girl,” said Mr. Miller, who asked her to dance at a holiday ball before Christmas. “It took efforts to pursue her and get out of my social circle.”
She graciously accepted, and their first dance together that night was a fox trot to “I Can See Clearly Now.”
“He was definitely cute, but he was older,” she said, and so she was shy around him.
After each completed three years of cotillion etiquette classes, they became dance instructors during high school, and he regularly took her as his partner to demonstrate moves.
“Our friendship blossomed,” he said. “Only friendship.” He asked her to his senior prom, but she already had a boyfriend.
A few years later, when they were both at University of Georgia, they ran into each other every so often, but were in different social circles.
After college, they met in 2008 at engagement festivities for mutual friends and danced all night at the wedding the following year. Then in 2010, they attended another wedding of college friends taking place in their hometown. They both were single. “The stars were aligning,” said Mr. Miller, who was working in Atlanta. “We had an absolutely awesome time.”
When he heard that a bunch of friends would be in New York the next weekend, he quickly bought a plane ticket to join them, knowing Ms. Porter was working in the city and would also be there with her girlfriends. He managed to sit by her during group meals and gave her a quick kiss as she got into a cab after one evening out.
“I was kind of surprised by the kiss, and the intrigue,” she said, and she agreed to see him the day after Thanksgiving for their first date, when she was in Waycross visiting family. He drove four hours from Atlanta to see her.
While at a restaurant on St. Simons Island, Ga., she asked what his intentions were, and she recalled him saying, “Lindsay Porter, I have been trying to date you since you were 14.”
And though she wasn’t his date at the high school prom, he did have a second chance for a first dance with her, as the couple took the floor to fox trot to “I Can See Clearly Now” on their wedding day.

As far as outkicking his coverage goes, I don't think so. The two of them come from similar backgrounds (even if they ran in different circles), and that goes a long way. He's tall, not fat, and looks like a chill, sociable guy. She's very pretty and probably a bit uptight in a particularly Southern way, and she may appreciate a kind, steady, laid-back influence.
She may see in him that he'd be the ideal co-parent as they share the same values and grew up in similar circumstances (and would want to raise their kids similarly). |
