Not all of it. Many of the brighter stars are bright because they are relatively close to the Earth. For example, the brightest star, Sirius, is only about 9 light years away so the light we see now left the star in 2007.

The furthest object you can easily see with the naked eye is the Andromeda galaxy which is about 2.5 million light years away.

you can also do this by looking at the enormous tits of a girl you knew in high school. you are instantly transported back fifty thousand years to a simpler time when eating and reproducing were the only important activities.

if you had a powerful enough telescope you could theoretically look into it and see the past happening on earth, because the universe curves back on itself or something. i once read this in a brian greene book.

time is a localized phenomenon, so you are not really looking back in time in any meaningful sense, and its localized essentially because of the light speed limit of transmitting information. what im saying is i guess is that it doesnt matter that you are looking at some distant star from the past, its not some collective unified all encompassing past that is shared by your locale...so who cares.

titcr everything we see is light traveling from the object, from "the past".

But we don't see someone hit a base ball and talk about hitting a time traveling baseball from the past.

it would be cool to look through a powerful telescope and watch an alien space battle occurring in real time knowing that those civilizations are long gone. at least it would be cooler than seeing a ball from the past like in your example

Guy in my undergrad brought his GF to the observatory to break up with her. Just after telling her, he pointed this giant-ass telescope at the chick and was able to see her one last time before he'd broken her heart. It only lasted a moment, but if our school had more tech he could have stretched it out.
