Mandarin is basically the French of the sinosphere.
All the hard stops (-p, -t, -k) were gone b/c of how hard the Northern Chinese Plains were GAPED by the NOMADS.
The southern Cantonese are basically the descendents of frog eating southeast asians that were sinicized and the carpetbaggers that escaped the North during the rise of the 5 barbarians. Because of this they keep a lot of the classical chinese phonology, and this is also why the Sino-Korean words are pronounced closer to Cantonese than modern Mandarin.
Basically, the "Chinese Language" as the CCP advertises as a single language is a complete fraudlies.
Canto and Mandarin iirc are further apart in its morphology and phonology than Spanish/Portuguese/Italian |

But yeah, the development of Romance languages from Latin is very fascinating- I once read that from Lisbon to Paris, if you took a ride from a hypotetical taxi driver from the 6th century, you could ride from one village to another and understand each other's speech. And that villager would understand the town next to them's speech and so on, but if you made the guy from the first village to talk to the one 50 miles away they may not understand each other.

Ultimately through PIE, the Chinese word for honey, mi or mit in the old pronunciation, is a cognate with the English word "mead" |

all of these people were on the same plane with me for the next 14 hours. i heard people murmuring about it on the flight. probably the most awkward flight i'll ever take in my life. |
