I had an $850 Trek hybrid bike that I rode everywhere until it got fucking stolen last year. It was a good bike and smooth and comfortable enough. I've never owned a road bike, so I cant compare really re efficiency.

My typical long ride is 8 miles down the balona creek trail, then all the way down the strand from marina del rey to palos verdes and back. Total distance about 30 miles.

The entire path is asphalt, however on the beach areas, there is occasionally a little sand on the pavement. Also slow people on beach cruisers and hot chicks playing beach volleyball, so I dont go that fast for about 1/3 of the ride.

Best type of bike to buy for this? I don't plan on going on super long rides and I dont like riding on busy roads with cars (like PCH up malibu) I dont have a death wish. Let's say max price is $2000.

Heh, I had my FX stolen this year.

I got a specialized Roubaix. Great bike. Road bike, but relaxed geometry and has good amount of vertical compliance. You can get a lower-end Roubaix under $2K.

Yeah, of course. But get the fixie. Your calves and legs will look amazing and you can def handle it at those distances. Plus it's smaller and can be lighter. Also less likely to get stolen.

With a road bike you're going to want padded shorts. You can use a bigger seat on a fixed gear.

CF is very light but not durable, prone to catastrophic failures. If you're riding 80 mile days with lots of climbing CF is worth it. Aluminum is just foolproof

You could buy a frame separately and put together a $10k bike for like a 3rd of the price

road bike 100%

i have done lots of miles on a hybrid cos im a cheap fuck. they're a stupid concept and offer nothing if you can afford a cheap road bike. you lose power even at cruising pace, and comfort with road bike geometry isn't a problem unless you're obese.

There are some hybrids that are basically flat-bar road bikes and there are some hybrids which more "comfort" oriented which are actually terrible and not comfortable. The flat bar road bikes are ok but I personally hate flat bars.
