like a major terrorist attack on U.S. soil, economy goes into freefall, hillary is indicted. hillary is decisively beating trump by double digits in every blue and swing state except PA and OH. yes, polls this far out may not mean that much, but both trump and hillary are well-known national figures, so the vast majority of voters have made up their minds about them. they are both despised, but they will go for an unlikable person who is at least experienced, knowledgeable, mature, and doesn't act like a thin skinned bully. hillary will win.

This long, drawn-out battle for the GOP nomination hurts Trump's chances in the general election. He's still in the muck, encouraging fistfights and talking about dick size at his rallies.
If he had things sealed up by now, he could afford to act more reasonable and measured. He can still be a plain-spoken outsider with populist appeal, but he could tone down some of the more divisive, "fighting words" elements of his campaign.
Plenty of moderate urban Republicans who hate Trump do so because of his divisive rhetoric - not because they have anything against the idea of a plainspoken nonestablishment candidate, or disagree fundamentally with his actual policies.
He could also afford to craft his arguments in a manner that appeals to more moderate and educated Republicans. He's a smart, wealthy man who has spent a lot of time around smart, wealthy individuals. He has also raised very well-adjusted children (especially Ivanka). So we know this is something he can do.
But not yet. And people like us will continue to see him as a racist buffoon. The longer Trump needs to play the white trash racist card, the more Hillary will benefit come November.

Attn Libs: here's your problem in this hypo - people are going to have to actually vote for HRC. Outside coastal blue pockets and with dem client groups, that's a tough sell.
Have you ever heard HRC speak? It's terrible. There's a reason dem leadership did their best to limit the debates, she's not a very likable person and seems to run bad campaigns.
Hate on Trump all you want, but anybody is going to run strong against HRC.

Yea. Her first attacks on Trump went spectacularly poorly.
This is such a great time to follow politics.
