Join your local bar assocs' small firm groups and go to meetups and stuff. Solos and small firm lawyers like to refer to other solos and small firm lawyers.

Build a decent website. Build up your Avvo profile and start answering questions on their forum. I don't do that anymore, but it helped me get clients when I first went solo.

I use Clio for practice management software. It's pretty good and reasonably priced.

I built a website using WordPress.

Prof liability insurance is going to be state/practice specific, so I don't really have good advice there.

If you're a PLLC or equivalent the taxes are relatively simple. I didn't have a bookkeeper my first year, but you could ask around among other solos in your area for recommendations (someone who understands law firm accounting, trust accounts, etc.).

I work from home and use a virtual office, and I would recommend that at least to start, until you have a better idea of whether you really need/want dedicated everyday office space.

Get a Fujitsu ScanSnap.

At this point, I don't really chase down new clients, but I would recommend not ignoring clients/matters that you might think are too small. My biggest client (nearly half my billings) came from a piddly little $250 matter. I just happened to catch them on the way up.

"Build up your Avvo profile"

That company seems shady as fuck, and I've literally never heard a single good thing about them.

I've heard they operate like the BBB. "Pay us and we'll help get that score up."

I get a lot of inquiries from Avvo. They are a bit shady when it comes to SEO, but that's what makes them so effective as a marketing tool.

start taking some title company owners out to lunch, see if any of them need your services. Title companies and accountants get all sorts of real estate legal issues (more than just closings) brought to them, so they are good sources.

I would stay in your niche (or niche down even further) and target transactions that are too small for big law firms (billables too high) but significant enough to make some money. You basically want to raid any transactions that your ordinary small and mid sized firms take, but you're offering "biglaw" expertise and experience for the same rate.

Also if you're on decent terms with your practice group, assuming you're competent and not let go for ability, and they're not starving for work themselves, perhaps you can get some referrals that they would turn down?

"but you're offering "biglaw" expertise and experience for the same rate."

Outside of criminal and PI work, is there *any* small firm that doesn't advertise itself as "big firm quality, small firm prices," or some variant of that?

Well OP has actual biglaw experience, so that sets above a good number of small firm lawyers who don't. Regardless, one person only needs a handful of clients, so who cares if the pitch is similar? Just need to pick off a few to get rolling.

Can even price cheaper a bit than those firms at first until a base is built, then raise prices with long-term steady (and happy) clients.

That's precisely what I'm suggesting--targeting a notch below biglaw level clients, either deals your firms turn away or the types that usually hire local small firm to do.

Presumably if you're well trained, you're going to overdeliver and spot all kinds of things their old counsel never did and you'll be off and rolling. A lot of these firms practically commit malpractice on a daily basis and their semi but not quite sophisticated clients don't know the difference.

Relevant to my interests as a TRANNY. Just try to get some incorporation/volume shit to make a little $$ while you try to land an institutional client that will give you a solid $5k a month in billable work or some shit

Slowly build up some experience in some kind of lit. I hear there's a shit load of work out there for litfags than trannies in a solo-environment. (Even if it's just unlawful detainer shit to keep you busy)
