I know rainmakers who have plenty of time for a family life. Not sure if that's what they do with their free time though.

Not true at all. Laughable 1st year comment. Most rain maker partners have to work their asses off to win big deals because they're competing against 10 other rain makers from other firms

this. I also hire these people and used to work under several of them. The true "rainmakers" that I worked for were excellent lawyers and worked their asses off.

Right, but those are the rainmakers who are 50 or 60. They spent their entire twenties, thirties and forties (and maybe fifties) grinding it out 24/7 to reach that point. It's not like they just graduated from law school and started shmoozing with people to get where they are. Much more to it than that, and lots of sacrifice involved. Probably lots of affairs, distance and deep-seated resentment, too.

I work for one of these dudes (or more like the service partners that do all of his clients' work). Pretty sure these guys will exist as long as boomers are still in senior positions. Doubt there'll be many in the next generations so fortunate though.

Two words: Business Development.

Your performance is measured by how much in billings your firm collects from clients you sign. If you're the guy's guy who is good at networking and gladhanding the firm's existing client base, you're no good. If you're the guy who is good at being a "practical lawyer", i.e. practicing law and solving client problems, you're no good.

You need to go out there and develop potential business, get that new business to use your firm and pay its bills. And if you leave the firm, you need to make sure that these clients you developed will move with you.

buddy of mine does corporate stuff at regional biglaw. Made partner a year or two ago, has all of his own clients. Brings in about a million dollars of business per year, really doesn't do work for any other partner. Great, likeable dude, a "guy's guy," works really hard and is really smart. Is he a rainmaker in training?
