There are plenty of litigation jobs in megacorp inhouse, but your job is to manage outside counsel, brief the bosses about big cases and do some bullshit trainings on the side about legal holds and attorney-client privilege. These are the people that I partially understand when they want to go back to a firm. Commercial/corporate lawyers who want to go back to a firm are invariably the worst type of sociopathic striver that didn't realize their transparent brown-nosing bullshit wouldn't help them inhouse.

Even if you don't it's more interesting to do something that the business is actually invested in. When you get a good result inhouse as a litigator the most you'll get out of anyone outside of legal is two seconds of "oh cool, good job" followed by them immediately forgetting what you said and going back to what they were doing.

Securities Lit: LJL

General Lit: LJL

Appellate: O THE HORSEPOWER GET THEE TO A COURT

Bankruptcy: Surprisingly, LJL

White-Collar/Gov't Shit: DOJ/AG, boutique, maybe inhouse compliance if something like FCPA or pharma stuff

IP Lit: PEPPAR ANGUS

Tax Controversy: Maybe IRS, probably chill boutique

Labor/Employment: Better odds for inhouse; could cop a specialized firm but lots of them look TTT

Antitrust: LJL this is like white collar but even less marketable, right?

Non-White Collar Crime: How's working at a law firm from television?

Surprisingly C-fucking-R,

I had a classmate who was at BIGLAW, then went to Feds as a prosecutor.

They told me that L&E is the horrible b/c it bills at a lower rate than other practices, so even though you might CRUSH your hours compared to another associate, the firm is making MORE money off the other associate than you.

It really comes back to fuck you when you are competing against someone for P'ship.

This is pretty accurate. I did 50% gen lit and 50% 10b5 securities lit and it was utterly useless for exit options. Securities lit is way too specialized with zero transferability in house and gen lit doesn't allow you to specialize in any industry. If I had to pick lit areas with exit options it'd be soft IP and L&E. Soft ip is obviously betrer and you can often go in house at quite desirable tech companies in SV and LA but youd have to somehow specialize in it within gen lit at biglaw (or you find an IP boutique). I did intv at some l&e firms as a lateral but they were ttts where everyone mostly went to crappy law schools and comp seemed shitty. Idea of working on exec benefits and erisa stuff also made me want to shoot myself. Had I known what I know now, I would've done IP transactional, or fund formation. Those fields have a lot of exit options but no stupid law school grad knows until it's too late.

This is essentially what I practice now but there's only a bunch of firms that have big 40 act practices (like Shulte Roth) and you have great in house options, whether to a bulge bracket asset management arm or smaller places. But general corporate is fucking useless for those jobs too. no law student knows to think about exit options when they pick a practice area.

a lot of people going into corporate have no control over what they'll specialize in. don't know whether to be glad that my practice area is in demand at firms or furious that it's not in demand in-house. but either way i can't say i exercised much agency in getting into it

Much more likely to end up at a bank fighting over Proof of Claim Notices and Payment Change Notices in TTT credit card cases than doing anything interesting at a fund.

lit, of course.

you're profoundly specialized and can't do shit that you're trained for with a massive biglaw support apparatus. and chances are that you've never done anything except draft useless motions and memos for 90% of your career, so you're a fucking clown in court and don't know how to manage a case.

Very true.

Lit in BIGLAW seems pointless if you never go to trial nor take any depositions.

Litigation. BK is hit or miss depending on deals done and background. Obviously a guy coming out of Weil/K&E will do better than a random v100. Securities also seems awful. Going to plug here for T&E.

depends what you want. If "exit options" means more GC cuckoldry, then pick corporate. if "exit options" means being an alpha solo who doesn't take shit from anyone, the only option is LIT

LJL at shitting on litigation. 90% of why people need lawyers is litigation. Every other practice area is tiny as fuck.

shitttigators have better exit options for basically every practicing attorney job, but if you want to stop practicing/leave the law altogether, a corporate background is likely better. I'm not sure if the work is any less shitty though at a bank -- read the story on James Woolery for instance:
