I had never had a real job before that. I went straight from undergrad in law school, and my only job had been that big firm, where I'd also summered.
All of this mental anguish you're feeling is exactly what "they" want you to feel. "They" are the powers that be who enjoy holding the rest of the world under their thumbs--even egocentric lawyers who think they're hot shit because they work in BigLaw. ProTip: You're not hot shit; you're an exploitable monkey working for overweight boomers who are good at manipulating people around them. (If you're really unlucky, you're working with some shrew lawyer who has lost all sense of self-identity and whose life is now defined by her job).
My advice, get the fuck out of there as soon as you can. That doesn't mean you actually have to quit. But check out of their mentally ASAP. Let them fire you and get some of dat severance and/or unemployment.
Again, the notion of being fired has you scared, right? Of course it does. That's what they want from you. They want you towing the line, frightened of being fired. That way, you'll up and quit and save them the unemployment and severance.
In short, refuse to be their pawn in this game. They do not care about you. They do not care about your success. They are not your friends. Get out of there, put in an honest effort toward something else, anything else, and everything will be fine. |
