Staying in biglaw is probably the biggest waste of life possible.

Do you have much debt? If not, you should figure out any other career you might be interested in. Anything else will be better than working with biglaw people.

I'm just so burned out right now that I just want out. Yeah, I'm thinking of going back to accounting/finance (LOLS). Lawyers are terrible people.

we have collectively around 30k debt, but 250k liquid saved (i think like 180k of it is actually liquid, rest is 401k)

also another factor is that my parents, who have like 10 million liquid, HIGHLY disapprove of this strategy...they want me to stick out.

but i can't take it anymore.

they are also so goddamn stingy with money....

they probably wouldn't give us money unless we were dying/starving to death

but yeah i'm too tired after work to look for new jobs and most law jobs look like shit

i kind of just want to quit then explore non-law jobs/careers

bro, no matter what kind of job you want to get in the future, it is ALWAYS easier to find a job if you are currently employed. this is true even for transitioning from law to non law.

that's just the sad truth about the world.

let your hatred for BIGLAW grow inside of you, and let it motivate you to find and apply to new jobs

I dunno, bro. Option 1: you have $250k and the freedom to do anything you want but in a few years you might run out of money. Option 2: you work in a job you hate for 12 hours a day until your family decides they hate you and you kill yourself but they get to inherit like $600k.

why are you still there then? You're worried about screwing yourself out of a gov't job by claiming short-term disability, but your mind is in this state? Dude that shouldn't be your major concern. Taking the risk someone might find out isn't your biggest gamble.

Sending you an angel. I've been where you are, you'll get through it. When you come out the other side, and when this matters to you (and one day it will), you will appreciate the training you got there and what a superior and promoteable employee it makes you - simply because every other job will seem like a cakewalk.

you can't find even a poorly compensated position? i don't know b/c i quit law without a backup plan and can tell you it can suck if you don't find anything after 6 months. no income stresses you the fuck out especially if what you're doing doesn't seem to be progressing at the rate you expected. if you think your non-paying position will prevent resume gap it's definitely better than nothing.

i haven't looked too hard for one recently but when i applied last year PI was completely skeptical of my interest. i ended up getting a couple offers in the private sector, but they were imo just as bad as biglaw.

well i think it's definitely an option worth exploring. you still leverage your experience but get to do it at a job you might feel is worthwhile and with nicer people. alternatively, if it's still not your thing, at least you avoid resume gap and have flexible hours allowing you to pursue other shit.

I know a bro like this

HYS + COA, walked away because of nervous breakdown, worked at a public interest group for 2 years before switching to VC, loves life. But he also notes how fucking lucky he was and how stupid he was for walking away without a real plan.

So do public interest for a couple years, build up some experience, then lateral to VC firm. Got it.

No offense but the answer is always obvious. If you get an offer from a big firm making 170 or so from the gate, you take it.

Dude you have over 200k free and clear. What's the fucking holdup? I'm considering quitting biglaw with no job lined up once I hit 50k free and clear. Life's just too short and with a law license, you're never unemployed just without clients.

Against my better judgment, I'm going to bite. I quit BigLaw (Vault 20) after 3 years. Over those 3 years, I turned my 100k+ student loan debt into $0 and had socked away another $50k. And then I left.

I had never had a real job before that. I went straight from undergrad in law school, and my only job had been that big firm, where I'd also summered.

All of this mental anguish you're feeling is exactly what "they" want you to feel. "They" are the powers that be who enjoy holding the rest of the world under their thumbs--even egocentric lawyers who think they're hot shit because they work in BigLaw. ProTip: You're not hot shit; you're an exploitable monkey working for overweight boomers who are good at manipulating people around them. (If you're really unlucky, you're working with some shrew lawyer who has lost all sense of self-identity and whose life is now defined by her job).

My advice, get the fuck out of there as soon as you can. That doesn't mean you actually have to quit. But check out of their mentally ASAP. Let them fire you and get some of dat severance and/or unemployment.

Again, the notion of being fired has you scared, right? Of course it does. That's what they want from you. They want you towing the line, frightened of being fired. That way, you'll up and quit and save them the unemployment and severance.

In short, refuse to be their pawn in this game. They do not care about you. They do not care about your success. They are not your friends. Get out of there, put in an honest effort toward something else, anything else, and everything will be fine.

My only issue is that the only jobs I could probably get in a short period of time are jobs that I don't want...like other firms.........If I had to work at another firm, I'd just go back to my previous career.

I also don't want to stay here for months while applying to jobs I actually want (but likely aren't even qualified for at the moment).

But people keep telling me I'm stupid for quitting with no job lined up, although I know a good number of people who have done that and been fine in the end....

All right, bro, I'm not going to completely rip you to shreds, because I can remember those feelings you're having. Having said that, man the fuck up. You are a human being born with dignity; have some self respect.

"My only issue is that the only jobs I could probably get in a short period of time are jobs that I don't want...like other firms.........If I had to work at another firm, I'd just go back to my previous career."

Only jobs I could PROBABLY get. Grow some testes, man. Push your boundaries a little bit. You cannot get a job you don't apply for. [Insert quote from Gretzky about missing 100% of shots you don't take]. Have some hunger and a little faith that maybe, just maybe, you can do something different than law.

"I also don't want to stay here for months while applying to jobs I actually want (but likely aren't even qualified for at the moment)."

Why the fuck not? Are you scared that you're going to be told "no." Get over it. Do you cower in the corner at the slightest hint of social interaction for fear that the other person won't accept you 100% for who you are. Fuck em.

If you send out 1,000 application, who cares if you get 999 "no" responses. All you need is 1 yes. Again, I know that shit's cliche. But the reason it's cliche is because there is at least enough truth to it that people repeat it over and over.

And if you're scared that you might get the occasional mean email or talking to at your existing job, brush that shit off. Which transitions us nicely to:

"But people keep telling me I'm stupid for quitting with no job lined up, although I know a good number of people who have done that and been fine in the end...."

See point 2 again and stop worrying about what other people think. It's your life and you get to decide what you do with it. Only one person is fucked when you wake up at the age of 55 and realize you just wasted the best years of your life--you. Those other people don't have to live with the consequences of YOUR decisions.

Here's what it boils down to: You're sounding aspie as fuck. I'm not saying you're aspie, but it's how you're coming off. That's gotta stop immediately. You need to look in the mirror and fucking believe in yourself.

I believe in your ability to do that.

Take this opportunity to stop being such a bitch and people pleaser. Starting tomorrow, tell every single partner who gives you work that you are overloaded and cannot take on anything. If the partner still insists, you must say "I have too much on my plate and it is not happening. End of story."

I had the same thing happen. Remember you are profitable at billing 800 hours. So stop thinking you need to bill over 2000 to be of any value.

In addition to what I said above, email one partner on a project you don't like and tell them you don't have the availability to properly handle it.

Stop being a bitch and pretending like you are powerless, use this as an opportunity to try stand up for yourself. If still unsuccessful then quit.

Preach, my brother. Stop being a bitch and exercise your basic human decency. You're being the equivalent of a cuck right now as those boomer partners run a train on your wife/fiancee/girlfriend/chick you think is hot.

Also, the line about not being available to "properly handle it" is CR advice. Don't make it about your inability, focus on the fact that you want to do an appropriately-excellent job on your other projects. And be prepared for the awkwardness that this phone call/meeting might cause. Make your peace with the fact that this might get awkward or heated, and stand your ground. Don't be the one who blinks.

Nah this is rancid flame. Lots of people quit with nothing lined up and are fine long term. But life will be stressful after like 3 month mark and you will start to wonder if you will ever get anything, and will get progressively worse until you find something, which could take up to like 18 months depending on whether you are picky, etc. So only do it if you are truly miserable. If you don't wake up dreading to go to work, but just generally are dissatisfied, then I'd stay. But if you really are miserable on a day to day/minute to minute basis, then life is too short.
