I don't think its evangelicals who are flocking to Trump.
I think Trump is the direct result of the GOP opening its arms to the racist and bigoted elements in the working/middle class white demographic. The GOP welcomed these people after they fled the Democrats after the Civil Rights Act etc was passed in the 1960s.
Now, these people (many of whom are secular or only nominally Christian) are finally realizing that the mainstream GOP didn't give a shit about them - they weren't business elites, nor were they out-and-proud Godmos.
They were religiously and socially agnostic people who didn't give a shit about abortion or gays enough to vote based on these issues, and weren't corporate types who saw themselves or their children aspirationally as one day being the 1% types running the show.
They were just normal folk who wanted the opportunity to work hard and get a fair wage in return. And they loved America. But their vision of America didn't include brown-skinned people with weird-smelling foods who TOOK THEIR JERBS. Nor did it include sending their dotters off to college and having them come back as brunch-eating shrews with Goldman Sachs offers and black boyfriends. They don't like seeing hip-hop take over Broadway and Johnny Weir at the Kentucky Derby. So they got mad as hell. They like Trump because he's a strong voice who talks about women and minorities like their Daddy used to, and promises to bring the jerbs back home.

your analysis is just wishful thinking, ace, and it doesn't match up with the facts of trump's support
the gop doesn't and hasn't pandered to the racist and bigoted elements of the working/middle class
trump's support is coming from racists and bigots, but it is coming from both sides of the political aisle. that's why some many of these supporters are claiming they will vote for hillary if trump gets screwed or they won't vote at all.
trump, himself, is and has been a moderate democrat. he has shifted right for purposes of running as a republican, but it's as transparent as a window to anyone with any perspective at all.
in fact, rephrase it as 'I think Trump is the direct result of the GOP not pandering..." then, your post works.

Edited. You're right - "pandering" is too strong a word, but the GOP has tolerated those elements in the party for too damn long. They accepted them in after the fled the Democratic party, but didn't address any of their (mainly economic and secular social) concerns.
