i will probably change my registration to dem and vote for bernie in the CA primary just to fuck Hillary.

I wasn't originally a trumpmo, but I would take him and 8 years of mockery and fascist violence over letting that cunt get her lifelong wish of riding bill's coattails to lead the free world.

the rational part of me realizes that hillary would probably be better for my career and portfolio as an corporate whore, but the lulz is worth it.

do you know how to tune a sitar? Have a good place for buying strings and parts? How much is it?

If the above works out, I guess it would be a pretty interesting instrument. I'd love to get a legit pedal steel, but they are like $2k+ and I feel like I'd only use it every so often.

I've played them pretty extensively. I actually have no idea where to buy strings and parts, but I bet I can find a source. Tuning changes depending on the individual raga, as do the frets - you move them up and down to create microtonal intervals. The most common setup is equivalent to the low four strings on a guitar in DADGAD, although detuned slightly to somewhere in the C-C# root range. The 13 sympathetic strings underneath the fretboard are then tuned to match the raga as well.

I am going to buy a pedal steel at some point.

yeah sitar pitch-bending is ungodly rough on the fingers. you really yank those fuckers some distance to get the big bends. a professional player once told me in all seriousness that he needed to rotate through finger-grooves because if you stuck with one set too long you'd get nerve damage

the test of a good sitar is being able to bend the main string up a perfect fifth.

lol jfc. a FIFTH. i think if i went down to 9s on my les paul i could maybe bend a perfect third.

of course, a sitar's frets are raised and arced for that purpose.

cool. neutral 3rd is just what i'm used to calling a third that's midway btw major and minor (so 7 quarter tones rather than 6 or 8). there's must be some more meaningful terms in indian and arab technical vocab but i have no idea what those would be.

will be super interested to hear. thank.

is a neutral third an even temperament division of an octave into mathematically perfect thirds? i.e. if a given octave spans X hertz, the neutral third is an x/3 interval?

Author: titillating pocket flask idea he suggested

no, that's actually the major third, which is 8 quarter tones and thus 1/3 of an octave (24 quarter tones). that's why there are only four augmented triads and all the others are inversions:

C E G#

Db F A

D F# Bb

Eb G B

E G# C, etc., and now we're back where we started

likewise, the equal-tempered minor third (6 quarter tones) exactly divides the octave into quarters, which is why there are only three diminished 7th before they cycle:

C Eb F# A

C# E G Bb

D F Ab B

Eb F# A C and we're cycling

the neutral third is 7 quarter tones and thus does not divide a single octave evenly

yeah, i understand all that. there's an epic screed in an old guitar player by pat martino in which he bashes the TTT piano 7+5 additive methodology of teaching the instrument in favor of a multiplicative 3x4/4x3 aug/dim triad/tetrad system. for example, instead of thinking of building a C major chord as stacking a C + major 3d E + fifth G you think of it as lowering the G# in the aug 5th triad one fret to get your fingering. any lowered half step will give you a major triad the fifth below the lowered note.

i was asking if the neutral third is the actual mathematically perfect division, since the maj/min 3ds rely on interval ratios from the root that have a few cents of error in an even temp scale.

if not, what's the point of the neutral 3d?

oh, i see what you're getting at. an equally tempered major third is the mathematically perfect division. a tempered major third is exactly 400 cents by definition, which is quite close to a pythagorean major third (81/64 or 407.8 cents) but hugely sharper than a just third (5/4 or 386.3 cents). in practice, guitarists will be closer to the pythagorean than the just third because it's hard to play a just third on an equally tempered fretboard, but the pythagorean major third sounds a little too wide, so they'll tune down against it.

the point of the neutral third is that in music that includes neutral seconds, you can get neutral thirds. arabs don't usually use the quarter tone itself as a melodic interval, but they do use the 3/4 tone as a 2nd that's halfway between a major and minor second. no idea what indians do but i imagine the ideas and math are similar

probably. northern indians have something like a 22 tone scale.

what i find most interesting about indian music is scale mixing: often ascending and descending scales in the same piece will have different modes. you'll see it in what i've been writing: ascending scales are lydian and descendings are mixolydian. the combo of ionian/mix is popular, with a 7-1-2-1-b7-6-5 line common.

I don't think so. They have an erg, so I am familiar with how much full body cardio shit can suck. not sure if that would help me dominate at basketball as much as running and lifting though.

they are hellish. I start sweating within like a minute and a half. It's hardcore right out of the gate. Awesome for cardio stuff (you will breath like you are sprinting or running up a steep hill). Good for doing 10 minutes after you lift.
