he makes 3-400ish

ended up getting a 50k with stupidly decent stats which he definitely didnt need, but like with all ring purchases he took it as a dick measuring contest

That's on the low end.

2 months of salary at $300k is $50k.

At $400k, he should have spent $67k.

And that's only at 2 months of salary. A big swinging dick like that really should be spending 3 months of salary.

Seems like he can afford it.

Some doods also like to show off what they can afford, and buying a stupidly expensive ring for their now-fiancée falls easily in this universe. Guys like this love the idea of their GF showing off the ring to all of her other GFs. It validates them as a provider.

Yes. There's a certain sort of guy who likes showing off what HE bought for his girl, sort of like as an exercise in branding/marking his territory. It's a THIS GIRL IS MINE, I BOUGHT HER WITH THIS BIG ROCK mentality.

You see this a lot among traditionalists who get off on girls who dig their provider game and like a bit of an imbalance.

I would move color up with the more important specs, especially for a white gold or plat ring or a ring with diamond sidestones. I know a lot of ppl in the industry and they often comment on color, even prioritizing it over cut. Most agree that clarity is flame so long as it's decent.

i sorta view color and clarity through the same lens, in that once you get to a baseline, the marginal benefit for doing better in either category isn't worth the extra cost, unlike cut and carat imo.

reasonable minds can disagree, and color probably deserves to be put ahead of clarity, but in no way would i put color ahead of cut.

Because people want it to be PERFECT since it's WEDDING RELATED.

Like EVERY SINGLE bride I have ever seen walk down that aisle has looked more or less the same. Doesn't matter if she's spent $200 or $30,000 on her dress (and yes, I've seen brides at both of those extremes). But it's a wedding and everything has to be done just right.

If that ring commemorated any other important milestone or had any other personal significance - birth of first child, graduation, gift from mom before she died - no one would care so much about how PERFECT it is.

i agree. for weddings (and colleges) people tend to drastically overpay for marginal improvements.

part of that is (global capitalism) though. watch any wedding show on tv and people will push the bride to get the dress that is just a little bit more perfect than the other one, even though its twice the price and money would better be allocated elsewhere.

I disagree re: colleges - there can be a very tangible benefit to attending an Ivy or a school like Duke over your local state U.

But the entire wedding industrial complex is SPS and ridiculously exploitative. These shows make it seem like it's normal for the daughter of a welder and a substitute teacher to buy a $2k dress and have a $50k wedding.

I don't mean choosing Duke over UTEP. I mean paying full freight for Emory over in-state at UNC or full-scholly at GaTech. Or paying private school prices for Siena College over in-state at SUNY-Albany. Something like that.

On this we agree. But at least you can blame college selection stuff on youthful unreasonableness. Like "OMG I just HAVE to go to USC because Dr. Dre has a school named after him there" when you can go in-state at Wisconsin (or any solid tier-1 flagship public).

People are typically older when they get married. I've seen mid-30s adults totally spend like first round draft picks come wedding time.

not really. if you're around wealthy people and u buy a 3 carat ring expect to literally have ur ring next to another 3 carat ring. bitches love to compare. u cannot get a good 3 carat ring for 15k. u can barely get a 2 carat ring for that price.

i'm not being a dick. i'm just around this shit all the time and it's amazing what rich bitches can spot from a mile away.

I don't agree with the car thing, because cars have utility and there's a real value in getting an expensive car, especially if you drive regularly.

Maybe a better analogy would be a watch - an engagement ring should cost just as much as the dood's baller watch.

It's nbd if a guy making $300k has a Porsche Cayman S. It's a big deal if he also has a lux 2br in the village, a hamptons share, takes 2 trips to europe a year, eats out at expensive restaurants, etc.

"The Car Rule simply states that a man should spend up to, but no more than the initial purchase price of his car!"

This, of course, penalizes guys who buy new and run the car into the ground.

lol, i remember in the heyday of XO's engagement ring obsession, you could never not mention the make and approximate cost of your ring.

shrewz can't fucking help themselves when it comes to this topic.

Because I have always liked sapphires more than diamonds and so have always wanted a sapphire engagement ring. My husband and I chose it and the ring design together.

the hilarious thing about stupidly expensive rings is that every woman the finance knows will talk about how it's so excessive and ridiculous and they would never want anything like that. anyone that hears about it through a medium like XO is likely to say something similar.

but privately, deep down, they are fucking grass green with envy and would KILL for a $50K ring that had everyone's jaw on the floor over the sheer excess. it's a true symptom of useless UMC striverhood when women go on and on about this shit.

assuming they're not the high end of their peers, this will not happen. this is common as fuck.

where do u think all these 50k+ rings go? the future set of blood diamond 2?

people with money don't really think about shit like this. u buy a 2 carat ring at minimum with the appropriate cut, clarity, and color and then u stay miserable for the rest of your life just like everyone else.

$50K rings are not common except among people with real money. Anyone who works for a living is typically going to scoff at that kind of flashy insanity. Most of the doctors I know, including in good specialty areas like the guy in the OP, spent $15-20K like everyone else.

The worst part about expensive rings is tipping 10%.

It isn't like they do 10x as much work to sell a $50k ring as a $5k ring, but you are still expected to tip the same %age.

He's an idiot. Now, he'll totally be expected to go high-end when it comes to everything....houses, cars, vacations, any kind of holiday parties, giving her $$$$ so she can always have a lavish wardrobe, birthday and Xmas gifts, etc. This is exactly why many high-earning doctors and lawyers end up having much lower net worths than they should.

He's a fool and will probably end up losing half or more of his money when they get divorced in 15-20 years.

this reminds me of my last trip to europe. my gf and i had a shitton of AA miles, and we toyed with the idea of upgrading to biz for the flight back home, which tends to be kind of a drag.

i ultimately decided not to do it, not because of the extra miles, but mostly because i didn't want my gf to get used to the idea of flying biz when it wouldn't be something we'd do often. she actually agreed with that rationale.

8. “My husband spent nearly $30,000 on my engagement ring and I know that only because we picked it out together. My friends comment on it a lot but I didn’t want it just because it’s a huge and timeless engagement ring. I work in a prestigious law firm and people absolutely would have judged me if I’d gotten anything cheaper. I actually think it might have hurt my career and if we were going to marry then he needed to understand that my career was around before he was.”

12. “I will never again tell anyone how much my engagement ring cost because the last time I told a group of friends a few of them all said shitty things like ‘you got screwed’ and ‘that’s cheap’. I basically picked it out and my husband wanted to spend way more so he’s not cheap. I just hate that some people can be so shallow about this one issue. I’m not friends with those two girls anymore, btw. No one gets to talk shit about the man I love. Dirt. Off. My. Shoulder.”

5. “I told my fiancee that I wanted a three karat ring to signify the three years we’d been together. He came through for me and it’s an unbelievable piece of jewelry. Honestly, if he hadn’t gotten it for me I don’t know if I would have felt right saying yes, it meant that much to me. I wanted proof that he cared enough about me to save up for the ring of my dreams.”

I'd spend that on my Russian girl. but most women that I see doctors marry - I just don't see the point in buy jewelry for them. you will not turn shit into a diamond by putting diamond on top of it.

A ring that expensive is completely unnecessary, unless you're royalty or some shit. Literally the only person I know who ever bought a ring that expensive was an ex Goldman baller with his own PE firm in NYC ( guy is worth almost $100M).

Even normally affluent people - investment bankers, business owners, etc., rarely spend more than $20-30k, and that is exorbitant, too.
