A 3 K/BB and 11 K/9 would be good for minor league ball, but not as good as what sure things like Strasburg were doing around his age.
If he wanted to be a hitter, he'd need to add a lot of bulk. And that would get in the way of pitching. So, yeah, he has to choose, and it looks like he should choose pitching. I project as a solid opening-day starter.

also, quite a few of the japanese players that have come through have been decent. |

But I highly, highly doubt any major league team is going to let him play the field when he isn't pitching. Best case scenario an AL team toys with having him DH occasionally, and even that seems extremely unlikely. It's a shame, because he sure can crush the ball in addition to being a great pitcher. But if the pitching doesn't work out he could easily pull an Ankiel and become a full-time position player. |

think they'll reach a deal since they're extending the deadline and the issues that they're hung up on seem pretty small all things considered. don't think mlbpa wants to fuck otani, their issue isn't with his deal in particular. in another year this might have dragged out a few weeks longer. |
