lol you stupid fucking poor

in a two-income household you'd have to be clearing $100,000 EACH (post-tax, rent, and loan payments) to be UMC. realistically you're looking at a $400k+ combined gross income to be considered upper-middle-class.

There is a steep cliff of the haves and have nots in this article.

It sound like half this country is now living in abject poverty.

So, the middle class has been squeezed to the point that there is a steep divide between the 50K family and the 100K family.

We're just fucked.

Dad is currently doing all kinds of awesome vacations like fishing in the Canadian wilderness, elk hunting in western US, etc.

thats one person making 100K per year, not two people combined. do you realize you make like 800 per week after taxes when you make 50K? so in this house, the dad brings home 800 per week and the mom brings home 800 per week, then you have to pay for a mortgage plus kids? I would argue such a family is borderline poor.

lol. the person arguing this must be still in college and never lived in the real world. lol at an 800 a week per person income being a lot. thats like the minimum to survive. when I first got out of college and was making that much, I couldn't even afford to live on my own.

The latter almost always has higher costs. Childcare obviously, but also they end up paying a lot more for conveniences.

There's also value to having a parent spend more time with the kids.

Finally, you have two parents each putting in full work weeks for $120k in the latter case, whereas in the former, you have a lot of excess capacity on the part of one spouse to get other things done, and if the non-working spouse decides to work, you will have even higher income.

CR. I know a lot of teacher-teacher couples. Having put in some years with their respective school districts, their combined income is probably approaching 100k, but they're poor as F. Mainly because they have the childcare haircut.

Additionally, their lives kinda suck because they spend about 1 quality hour a day together as a family.

Totally different situation if you have a breadwinner and a caregiver, where the breadwinner makes 100k.

Echoing others' comments here, it seems almost obvious.

For one thing, strongly disagree that the latter has better benefits. Benefits packages typically include families, and a position paying $120k/yr is more than twice as likely to provide generous benefits than a position paying $60k/yr.

Stability might be higher if someone loses their job. But if someone loses their job, then we're no longer comparing $120k to $120k. We're comparing $40k to $80k (assuming an unemployment payment of 1/3 pay).

The value of housework and logistics is not negligible. Daycare, meal prep, cleaning, etc. all have significant monetary value. Maid service averages $157 nationally. Do that once per week and you're talking about $8,000 a year. Childcare averages $11,666 per year in the U.S. That's already a $20,000 tax-free advantage of $120k over $60k+$60k.

"Using Census Bureau data available through 2014, he defines the upper middle class as any household earning $100,000 to $350,000 for a family of three: at least double the U.S. median household income and about five times the poverty level."

Depending on COL, this sounds about right. $100k is downright poverty-line in NYC for a household (though not necessarily for your average singleton living with roommates in Murray Hill), but a family in Kansas City could do well off of that.

I actually think a lot of these people in the $100k-$350k range are in a precarious spot and I don't necessarily agree with the WSJ's conclusion that it's the UMC folks vs. everyone else. There are more UMC-paying jobs, but shit costs more and certain cities are getting much more expensive (and those are the cities with the highest growth rate in UMC jobs, likely).
