yep. there were periods where you could be a complete retard and make money. show up in williston, north dakota in 2011 and literally do anything.

literally buy any real estate for sale in nyc during the 1970s and 1980s.

move to china in 1988 and literally do anything.

buy-to-let in the UK in the 1990s and you were golden.

small-time entrepreneurs need to identify the macro environment. figuring out what you're good at is only the beginning.

Dumb statement. Timing is one factor but building a successful business takes so much more -- something that, truth be told, your standard HYS > Biglaw grad has never experienced. This is why the rewards are so great.

Yes and no.

There will always be idiots who were in right place at the right purely as a product of coincidence, but this observation really isn't useful. Timing any market just right is next to impossible.

Most of the people who really benefit when an opportunity comes along are those who managed to squeak out an existence when times were tough because of some mix of skills and personality traits, and after doing that, they can really capitalize when the opportunity to do so presents itself.

step 1: buy LOW

you want to buy a franchise that is underpriced. this is by far the easiest part, you just need to execute! remember your 3 Ts.

step 2: sell HIGH

once your franchise is chugging along you want to sell it STAT. this is by far the easiest part, you just need to execute. remember your 4 Ls!

this is probably the best reason to have a good handle on the current state of the economy, how boom-bust cycles work, solid knowledge about a few specialized markets, etc. not saying u have to be an economist but if youre a sailor its nice to be able to read the sea and predict the weather.
