it was an expression of the warped feminine psychology of its primary audience -- like the cinematic preoccupation with 'serial killers' in the 90s, which was also driven by the demented tastes of women. |

The most elegant is what he calls 'terror' which is where you scare the shit out of someone without showing your hand
Then there's what he calls 'horror'which is where you try to terrify and then also confront the audience with something scary (I'd argue jump scares fall into this category)
Finally there's the 'gross-out' which is self-explanatory
