'Saw' is the one i remember reading about, and it shocked me.

it seemed not so much a scary 'horror' movie but rather some kind of exercise in purely deviant snuff-film titillation.

'what's the most FUCKED UP and sadistic way we can kill someone?? hehehehehe.'

it was an expression of the warped feminine psychology of its primary audience -- like the cinematic preoccupation with 'serial killers' in the 90s, which was also driven by the demented tastes of women.

This.

Saw's brand of horror is even lower than jump scares, and jump scares are pretty fucking low.

Stephen King has a pretty good breakdown of the hierarchy of this stuff in Danse Macabre

The most elegant is what he calls 'terror' which is where you scare the shit out of someone without showing your hand

Then there's what he calls 'horror'which is where you try to terrify and then also confront the audience with something scary (I'd argue jump scares fall into this category)

Finally there's the 'gross-out' which is self-explanatory

cr the psychological effects of watching horror are pretty much identical to the psychological effects of posting on XO with any regularity

(can confirm)
