I ended up getting this AR for $50 less than advertised on the site:

https://danieldefense.com/firearms/daniel-defense-m4-carbine-v7tm.html

Picked the M-LOK rail over the slim keymod rail. Thought it felt more comfortable and looked a little better.

In any event, did not get any sights or optics. The guy at the store (who is hilarious and awesome) suggested that I dispense with iron sights and just get a good red dot sight. Of course what they carry is some fairly high end optics. He suggested the Trijicon MRO for $490. Mount would run me another $65.

http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/140597/trijicon-mro-red-dot-sight-20-moa-matte?cm_mmc=pf_ci_google-_-Optics+-+Red+Dot+%26+Holographic+Sights-_-Trijicon-_-140597&gclid=Cj0KEQjwncO7BRC06snzrdSJyKEBEiQAsUaRjLs9pn98J4tuIzr1us8Tfjb-y-WPJysUeA3_3qEa-6gaAoD68P8HAQ

I see that there are a million different types of red dot and holographic sights - some used on top of iron sights, some used instead.

Basically I am going to be shooting at metal targets 50 yards, 100 yards and at most 200 yards away.

Thoughts on what I should get and why? Money is not quite no issue, but I am okay spending extra on something that is not going to shit out on me. Don't want to waste cash either.

Any other must have accessories? Any advantage to the open red dot sights that dont use a tube but just a framed lens?

mazal tov!

1) describe what the gun purchasing process is like in LA

2) what does your azngirl think of you getting a gun?

3) if you have kids, what safety measures will you take?

1) it's pretty easy. I made an appointment with the gunmo (highly recommended over going into a busy store) the dude shot the shit with me and offered me a couple of beers while we discussed the various models and options. spent about 90 minutes with him. I had to take the firearm safety test which is a legit joke - got 30/30 correct. Questions are like this: Firing a gun in the air is safe if there are no tall buildings or people around, true or false?

After passing the test I have the card which is good for 5 years. I can now buy any CA legal gun but have to pick it up after 10 day wait list. He said that if I decide on any accessories he sells he will install them for me when I pick it up in 2 weeks.

2) She was there and was supportive. I am buying her either a glock 19, a sig 229 or a CZ for her birthday. We are still figuring out what to get. She is a pretty great shot. Took my mom to the shooting range with fiancee this weekend and we were by far the best group of mixed gender shooters. all of us could hit consistently center mass or head. Other bitches were lucky to hit the 3' X 3' targets at all.

3) Once I have 2-3 guns I will buy a gun safe. For my AR it comes with a locked case.

congrats on the purchase, that's a fucking sick first AR 15.

I'm sure that red dot will be fine, looks like its pretty much an aimpoint-style red dot. Very nice that its always on. Probably lighter than an EO Tech, although I personally like the EO Tech reticle

(like this http://www.midwayusa.com/product/874089/eotech-exps2-2-holographic-weapon-sight-68-moa-circle-with-2-1-moa-dots-reticle-matte-cr123-battery )

But that's entirely up to you. Know that 100+ yards or so, the red dot reticle will cover up your entire target, no magnification.

A lot of people put iron sites as a "backup" - the gold standard for flip up iron sites seems to be the Troy BattleSight (like $200), but I have these and they work great and are really well reviewed Diamondhead for $89 https://www.amazon.com/Diamondhead-USA-NiteBrite-Integrated-Sighting/dp/B00JM6RDZ8/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1467140510&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=diamondhead+sites

how often do you use the iron sights? I don't want the extra weight for something I am never going to use. My red dot sight will last for 5 years. I am not going into fucking battle or anything - in the unlikely event I have to shoot someone in my house, I am sure the red dot will be fine

I know that if used properly iron sights can be more accurate than a red dot sight. I thought the red dot at normal brightness is 2 MOA at 100 yards so that should be quite a bit smaller than the target itself, but maybe I am reading something wrong.

I usually use my red dot, of course. But for $89, whatever. They weigh almost nothing and look mean as fuck. But overall probably unnecessary for **our** purposes of shooting at pieces of paper and maybe cans.

2moa at 100 yards is ok - when I shoot at targets from 100 yards that are like 11"x8" (whatever my range gives out for free), its hard to see WTF I'm aiming at because it covers the 6" diameter or whatever target circle. And mine is 1 MOA

Also, I think I told you this before, when shooting anything more than like 15 yards, you will want a spotting scope of some sort to see where you are hitting. Impossible to see the little holes on the target otherwise.

I assume normal iron sights cannot do better than 2 MOA at 100 yards anyway.

Good call on the spotting scope.

EO Tech is a holographic sight? A little more accurate with a 60 MOA ring around a 1 MOA dot, but runs out of power. Basic difference?

it's all the same shit. Some people like the reticle better on an EO Tech. Runs out of power a lot faster though (like 500 hours or so?)

So assume all of these optics that cost $100 are complete bullshit then. If $500 is not out of the ordinary I might just get what the gunmo suggests and have him take care of it.

I wonder what the purpose of the open red dot sight versus the tubular sight is.

the $100 red dots tend to be bullshit, but the primary arms one is pretty well reviewed online http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-micro-dot-with-removable-base-eta-early-may-2016/p/md-rbgii/

I have one of these on a .22 and it works fine

But for your gun, might as well go all the way. The sight your guy suggested is 180 so you really can't go wrong.

open red dot vs tubular?
