That doesn't mean that millions of people weren't killed in the death/extermination camps or that prisoners in the other camps were not killed or allowed to die of neglect. |

-Not every Nazi camp tattooed people, and the practices is primarily associated with Auschwitz. Most other camps simply used armbands or sewed numbers on clothing. Tattooing took off in 1941 because 1. tattoos made it easy to ID corpses even after they were stripped, and 2. It made it easy to process the huge surge in prisoners with the launching of Barbarossa. Even at Auschwitz, though, the system only became universal in 1943.
-People gassed at the 1942 death camps (the deadliest phase of the Holocaust) were, to my knowledge, never tattooed. I'm fairly certain the same is true of people gassed on arrival at Auschwitz.
-If you were tattooed, it was because you were being kept alive as a laborer rather than being killed immediately. Auschwitz wasn't just a death camp, it was also a vast industrial enterprise relying on a large amount of slave labor. |
