College students like me took several years out of the job market and turned many other potentially lucrative opportunities to aware ourselves on issues of importance for our generation and for generations to come. We pay for the military. We pay for banks. We pay for prisons. Yet we do not pay for college. Why? Is it perhaps that college students must be kept in economic bondage for fear that the alternative is that they will overcome our oppressive social constructs and truly transform America into a land of greater consciousness? I wonder.

That's what I really believe, but we can subvert the system through small acts of defiance, which is what I learned in college. Millennials have to realize that we have collective power and agency and use this to challenge the system and its norms for everyone.

I totally agree. But it looks like things are getting better. Thanks to the Sanders campaign, which I admired but did not support, it looks like Hillary Clinton will pass legislation to afford major debt relief. This could be her Obamacare moment.

in so far as college facilitates relationships, its valuable. but in reality its just all competition and comparing grades and sucking up to profs to get a better grade. if they got rid of grades maybe college could be a relationship building experience, who knows. as it is its just a meat grinder.

Many state legislatures are cutting funding for universities. It's part of the reason that Republican control of state and local government is really a pressing issue for our country right now. John Oliver explains this really well, but I can't find the video right now.

Here's why that's a problem. It's 2016, and the government ALREADY subsidizes corn and oil and the military and Wall Street and you're telling me that ONLY student loan subsidies magically make costs go UP unlike every other subsidy where costs go DOWN because all those other subsidies are applied on a LONG-TERM scale whereas you want to (exclusively, selectively, meretriciously) treat student loans as an exception that can only be evaluated on a SHORT-TERM scale, ignoring salient facts like how student loan interest rates are pegged to the overall base lending rate anyway so your concern trolling is deeply out of place here and contributing to the oppression instead of fixing it.

Expenditures per student is almost certainly less in free/controlled tuition countries where the govt controls post-secondary education than in the US. Larger class sizes, fewer sports teams, shittier accommodations.

Because college is only useful as a signaling device, and signaling devices become more useless the less onerous they are. The more people go to college, the more watered down the signaling becomes. Hence the need for graduate degrees, internships, etc. to supplement the signaling.

Ultimately, college does nothing to increase the value of human capital -- it's merely a sorting mechanism. Sending more people to college (for free) fucks up the sorting mechanism.
