Also they are the academic types. Lots go onto PhDs and do research or academia, etc. They don't care about power/prestige/money (but besides that, many are born into it anyway).

The small size of the school also contributes to that. Most people have never met a Caltech grad, especially outside CA, because there just aren't that many.

Individual problem sets that took 20 or 30 hours each, 6 or 7 classes per trimester, professors (esp in math) who could not teach. I took Calc bc in high school and got a 5, took differential equations in high school. When I got to Caltech I couldn't place out of anything, and in fact I nearly failed Math 1a.

Without sounding too sexist, I think it has gotten easier since I left and they made it a priority to admit women.

I had two friends attempt suicide my sophomore year.

sounds about right. my friend from high school dropped out of caltech..then fucked around for 2 years (got into drugs and shit, was probably depressed) before going to an average state school...took her awhile to get her life back on track.

my friends who finished there were all like perfect scores in everything...and they generally had shit GPAs except for the super, duper geniuses (who ended up getting PhDs at Stanford)

Yeah, xo bullshit aside, I think higher ed realizes that its heyday is over and the end of the easy-money days are coming fast. Schools are trying to get as much money under the wire as possible before they really get squeezed.

Nowadays when I see, e.g., LSE or Columbia on someone's LinkedIn, I just assume it's some cash-cow scam program.

I've met and worked with a number of black MIT grads, and they were all very smart and knew their shit as well as anyone. Almost all were children of Nigerian or Caribbean immigrants or immigrants themselves.

that's because MIT is tough as fuck, but they do practice AA

the brothers who get in are still pretty damn smart though, a cut above non-H blacks. the ones who can't quite manage engineering/hard sciences tend to major in biz, and there's no shame in admitting you can't compete with USAMO superstudyazns

I think most STEM-focused schools are still legit. Harvey Mudd, Rensselaer, Rose-Hulman, any of the school of mines (CO, NM, MT) all are generally devoid of shitlibbery + actually fail out dumbs.

9th on Payscale's salary survey of 0-5yr career; and that doesn't take into account a lot of their grads are probably staying in the local/flyover/lower-pay market.

Above poster is probably right that these schools aren't 'elite', but I'd argue these are some of the last universities that don't rubber stamp degrees and allow people to graduate with SJW "studies" degrees.

tbf, it's a school which only generates engineering grads. of course it's high.

That's the premise of this thread, the schools being advocated as elite are all on the Payscale 100 list from my quick scan. See all the academies in the top 10, the school's of mines, etc.

Elite schools are festering SJW holes and that's reflected by the low market value of their graduates.

it's just the low market value of libarts vs engineering, which I don't think anyone would debate

MIT is fairly lib, btw
