I go to lunch periodically with a Boomer AUSA who sincerely believes he's akin to an underpaid, overworked social worker. We'll go to lunch and he'll bitch about how I get paid more than him. He always feints toward the tab as if he's going to get it, but I always pick up the whole thing. He'll pause his "getting out my wallet" routine if I'm taking longer than usual to let me catch up.

I laugh and treat him like he's one of the bros (I'm 6'2" and fratty). In my mind I play a scene on loop where I walk into the restaurant and shoot him in the chest and forehead with a suppressed 9mm and coldly walk out. (I dunno why that specific scene; maybe it was in a Bourne movie or something.) It helps my nodding and laughing seem more genuine.

The latter, obviously.

There is a component here, though, of we both owe homage to a third guy who (1) put me in my present position; (2) ordered this AUSA guy to talk to me and shit. So I have to please him.

This is all just as interesting and cool as it sounds.

He probably hates it because it's not a good job. Especially in flyover.

If he's doing criminal all he does is prosecute retards on FIP, drug, and kiddie porn charges.

If civil, mostly tort claims act type garbage.

Law tards lionize AUSA jobs because they seem prestigious. They're not.

Hardly anything goes to trial too. So you're not getting that kind of experience.

I've also heard AUSA jobs can be less stable in that a new US Attorney could come in and clean house

Lol bro, there are lifers in the offices we're talking about who "work" (secretary style, no billing, where they work 10-15% of the time they're in the office) less than 40/hrs a week and vacation 6 weeks a year.

Some of these guys barely work their cases any harder than their state-level counterparts, who have 12x the caseload.

You seem dumb.

No shit it's an easy job. It's a fucking government job.

The point is it's dull being an ausa and if you have the credinitials to get the job you could probably be doing something better

The creds of these lawyers aren't all that great. You're looking at the fact that there are extremely well-qualified people on the coasts who would kill for the job, and assuming that that must mean the job is super competitive. Many of these offices will only hire locals.

Look at the background of the AUSAs in the District of Kansas or something, and you'll find that probably 1/10 of the guys there could have landed a job with a V50 at the point that they got their AUSA job.

the creds of these guys are inflated relative to wherever they are. the AUSAs in kansas should have could have been baller law firm guys in kansas just like the ones on the coast. if the public service prestige and time off don't make up for the money it's not for you.

Just do regular bigfed attorney then. They telework and the pay is the same if not better than an AUSA

agree but they're probably into the prestige of being an AUSA. it sounds a lot cooler than 'i'm an attorney for the alcohol and tobacco tax bureau.' and it's got exit options. if you're just a lazy gov't lifer take the agency route. but those types probably aren't going to make AUSA even in flyover.

That's true enough, but xo doesn't typically control for location like that. It should be noted that, by national standards, the guys in D. Kan.'s USAO are not elite.

And that's worth pointing out, because if D. Kan. really wanted to fill the office with nationally elite lawyers, it could get them.
