The reasons are multitudinous:

1. rimfire ammo is not nearly as reliable as centerfire. Due to the way they are manufactured/assembled, the rounds do not ignite as consistently as centerfire - you pull the trigger and nothing happens. In semi-automatics and especially pistols, they tend to fail to cycle as well.

2. .22 is not able to penetrate far enough to consistently stop an attacker, and there is not nearly enough energy to damage organs.

3. The cartridge also does not have reliably expanding hollow points. See the lack of energy, as well as the small diameter and light weight of the rounds.

In summary, cop at least a .380 and preferably a 9mm as an outright minimum cartridge for self defense against dindus. Otherwise, you risk being beaten to death with your own handgun by an enraged groid. There is a very good reason that no police force or military equips their people with .22 rimfire weapons for combat purposes.

.22lr is one of the most commonly used rounds in murders. It’s first round stoppage rate is only somewhat lower than bigger, faster rounds. In addition, the lack of OVER penetration is ideal for me. I don’t want to worry about restricting myself to certain shooting lanes or otherwise killing my kids in a home defense scenario. While one wall won’t stop a 40gr round nose, with the right HP, a Sheetrock and plaster wall should significantly slow or even stop it.

3. CCI Stingers, Velocitors and Mini Mags.

Bottom line, a 22 out of a bull barrel with s good trigger can serve as a solid home defense weapon. Most people who say otherwise are ensmored wuth the American obsession with bigger and faster rounds. For Christ sakes, the Mossad uses it for assasinations.
