The Gabby Douglas "hand over heart" controversy during the anthem is interesting

She was the only member who didn't do so:

Apparently a lot of people on social media gave her shit for that, and also for seeming to be very sour the whole time and not cheering on her teammates:

Most of the comments in the article are pretty quick to blame this brou-ha-ha on "racist white amerikkans". They either say gabby forgot, or she was doing her own thing.
Regarding the fact that she forgot, she is a two-time Olympian who won 2 golds in 2012 and clearly did the hand over heart for both:
Interestingly enough, the US Code says people are supposed to put their hand over their heart during the national anthem:

She did it that way because she was being pouty. She got called out for it by people who call out every athlete for shit like this. But let's not forget she was a direct beneficiary of that in 2012. She was 3rd in qualifying and Jordyn Wieber (defending world champion) was 4th, so she knocked out her teammate and one of her biggest competitors. If ANYONE should be a little more understanding it's Gabby. |

1. gabby is good on bars, and the team needed more bars help
2. gabby won a world silver last year in the all-around, so at the very least she has some recent experience under pressure.
also, marta karolyi explained in an article i was reading that part of the reason none of the girls who finished 4-6 were picked was because (a) they didn't have scores in BB, FX, or Vault that would surpass the top three US gymnasts, and in the team final only three gymnasts perform, and (b) they weren't great on bars, which is where the USA actually needed help. |

I do also think she feels like a bit of a fraud (as much as an Olympic gold medalist can feel like a fraud). Outside of that one gold in all-around in 2012, she hasn't done much of note (i noted in a prior thread that no single women's all-around champion in the olympics has ever failed to medal in an event final -- and Gabby has now failed to medal in an event final for two consecutive Olympics), and she has probably taken some criticism for that. Add that to her 7th place finish in the trials and no individual medals in Rio and she's prob a bit pissy. |

Raisman and the rest of the team were horrible to her in 2012. Their body language was horrible and they would barely speak to the young newcomer. They obviously didn't like that she came and took their shine.

i also don't necessarily see how that's per se racist. the US gymnastics team has had non-white girls on the team in the last 20 years, like amy chow, dominique dawes, annia hatch, mohini bardwaj, kyla ross, laurie hernandez, simone biles.
it certainly seems like simone and laurie get along just fine, and certainly kyla did. and aly is jewish. |
