well then it sounds like you're not the kind of person who overrates travel as do travel shrews (male and female) who characterize it as a vitally important part of life

travel is fine but it is generally overrated by many strivers in this way

it's fine just as eating pizza is fine if you enjoy pizza or as going to football games is fine if you enjoy football but it's often worshiped as a 'way of life' or seen as existentially vital

I think travel is a vitally important part of life, along with cultivating other interests that are less location-dependent (appreciation for arts, self-improvement re: hobbies, general exploration of ideas and experiences).

do you think that most serial travelers in their 20s-30s feel this genuine passion for travel as you claim to feel, and that they're willing to pay the price associated with travel to fulfill this passion, or that they see travel as a form of status or as a checkbox that they need to fill

given how many serial travelers there are, how few other activities most pursue towards self-edification, and the fact that genuine personal passions are generally fairly unique, i think many serial travelers fit the latter description

It's a continuum. I think most people in general don't have "genuine personal passions" and travel is a fairly easy one to adopt since all it takes is vacation days and a certain amount of disposable income.

And as humans, much of us are at least status-conscious (however we define the term) even if we're not status-seeking.

all fair points

that there's a great deal of superficiality in modern travel is pretty unavoidable though, and it's much more inviting to people with superficial motives than are other self-edifying pursuits

I think it's a mix of a lot of the factors you mentioned. Even if the UMC strivers are doing it for box checking, they might all come to recognize how incredibly cool that for the first time in human history, you can see totally remote and alien parts of the world.

CR. All you really need is some money, vacation days, and a western passport and you can see more of the world than any other human from just a hundred or so years ago. Pretty 180 and I would feel like I'm wasting a huge opportunity if I just hung around MFH.

It's also insane how most of the world lives. You get it on a superficial level but it's always a mindfuck to go to some third world country and come face to face with the way the vast majority of humanity lives. I forget what it's called when you are fully conscious of the fact that every else around you has lived a life as long, rich and vivid as yours...but it's really humbling and makes biglaw seem less shitty.

I didn't limit this to international travel, or travel to certain sorts of places.

I do see immense value in exposing yourself firsthand to different locations, people, places: even if it's just to see something new and scratch the wanderlust itch before you get tied down to responsibilities. It's about recognizing that there's something greater than yourself.

Traveling is about gaining knowledge. It's exploration and going beyond your comfort zone. This can be a plane ride across the world or a subway ride across the city.

Of course, it can also be about relaxing in a comfortable environment that also allows you to shift your perspective.

Or, it can just be FUN.

My OP was kind of directed towards people who assume that people who don't travel internationally are tasteless and uncultured retards.

"people who assume that people who don't travel internationally are tasteless and uncultured retards."

In my experience, the people who "don't" travel internationally are also the kinds of people who "don't" travel domestically or are also averse to (or don't really make much effort to) check out cool shit within an hour drive or subway ride.

They also are the kinds of people most likely to live in an echo chamber.

And, yes, there is a very high correlation in my experience with people who "don't" travel internationally and people who are tasteless and uncultured retards.

The key in your sentence is "don't". Why doesn't someone travel internationally? Is it because of health reasons? Are they 70 and done with all of their traveling? Are they frightened of airplanes?

Also, there's nothing wrong with being a "tasteless and uncultured retard", as long as you own it and can generally get along with all different types of people (this last "if" might be too much to ask, though).

Most people don't travel internationally because it is expensive or they don't have the time.

Additionally I think most people are tasteless and uncultured retards, and the vast majority of people who DO travel internationally fall into that category. Travel is enriching for some people but if you fall into the "uncultured and tasteless retard" camp you will stay there--even if you've been all around the world.

"Most people don't travel internationally because it is expensive or they don't have the time."

This just means they don't prioritize it. And yes, a lot of these people are also not inclined to travel much domestically except to the same places over and over again.

I don't really see many people saying "I can't afford Africa, but let's go camping in Glacier National Park or visit a bunch of Civil War battle sites". These are usually people who spend a week each summer at the shore house and a few odd long weekends running over the same old ground. Nothing wrong with that, but there's a large element of "where there's a will, there's a way" re: travel.

1000000000000000000000000000% AGREED THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE UNCULTURED AND TASTELESS RETARDS, even if they are rich/successful/well traveled.

Then explore shit more locally.

What I'm saying is that the monetary constraints re: traveling don't have much to do with someone's desire to explore. If you don't have the $, certain places will be off limits to you. But we fortunately live in a country where we can see and do a lot of 180 shit a car ride away.

My argument is that the people who "don't" internationally travel also "don't" travel domestically or even take the steps to explore their city more.

It's an issue of saying "yes" to a new experience that takes you out of your comfort zone over doing the tried and true.

lol @ paying all that money if your sole goal is to "go somewhere warm to chill." if you're stuck on the east coast in the winter, just to fucking socal.

american lemmings paying an arm and a leg to "go to somewhere warm" is the biggest GC racket ever.

going to new places and getting away from the grind is pretty fun. the problem though is that the flying experience and hassles associated with it, are continually getting worse. every time i fly, i'm reminded of how much i hate it, and international flights are absolutely draining.

Sonnets From China

Here war is harmless like a monument:

A telephone is talking to a man;

Flags on a map declare that troops were sent;

A boy brings milk in bowls. There is a plan

For living men in terror of their lives,

Who thirst at nine who were to thirst at noon,

Who can be lost and are, who miss their wives

And, unlike an idea, can die too soon.

Yet ideas can be true, although men die:

For we have seen a myriad faces

Ecstatic from one lie,

And maps can really point to places

Where life is evil now.

Nanking, Dachau.

traveling is depressing you see how lazy and easy and good people ahve it in other countries taking siestas and going to beach while you receive 20 emails from some service partner telling you that you need to proofread briefs better and it was really embarrassing that the client noticed you once put a comma outside the quotation in a 25 page brief

with the right reasons, and under the right circumstances, it's not overrated at all.

but taking 2/4 weeks off a year from your shitty corporate job in TTT America going to a tourist trap like Bali or whatever is 100% shit and overrated.

i feel sorry for Americans. you literally get fucked by your elites harder than people from any other country. but keep telling yourself America is number one, lol.
